Just a preface, this chapter is kiiiiinda dark. So, enjoy!

To say that Cadmus was pissed off was an understatement.

He'd promised to stay behind with Liam when Scott ran off the field to check on Brett, and he'd been so focused on the fact that his cousin wasn't on the newest part of the Deadpool to notice that Nova wasn't even on the bleachers anymore.

The sound of sirens flooding the school made everyone start talking loudly, players and spectators demanding to know what was happening, as though anyone outside would really know.

Only when Liam grabbed his arm and asked where Nova was, did Cadmus's stomach drop. He looked around the spectating area anxiously, feeling his breathing grow tighter as he looked at Liam and shook his head.

"I don't know," he admitted, "but I'm going to find out. Stay here."

Of course, Liam didn't listen, and he was hardly the only other student who rushed toward the school since most of the lacrosse players were barreling through the doors to see what was going on.

There were officers everywhere, and while the other kids seemed okay with stopping when they were told to, Cadmus just kept walking. Someone grabbed his arm, and he whirled toward them with a snarl, using all of his self-control to keep his eyes from going orange.

"You cannot go in there," the deputy informed him, making his eyes narrow. "It's an active crime scene."

Glancing toward the locker room, Cadmus took a sharp breath in when he saw Nova sitting on one of the benches, holding a kleenex to her nose with a pile of bloody ones beside her. Turning back to the deputy, he set his jaw. "The hell I can't," he retorted. "My little cousin is part of that crime scene, and you'll sorely regret it if you don't get the hell off of me and let me go to her."

The officer's grip tightened on his arm, and he almost rolled his eyes at the weak attempt to restrain her anger. "Are you threatening me?" she demanded, making Cadmus smirk.

Thankfully, he didn't get the chance to respond since Sheriff Stilinski caught sight of what was going on and quickly moved forward. "Danvers, let him in."

The deputy looked borderline enraged but reluctantly shoved his arm away from her and gestured with her head for him to go in. He didn't even give her a mocking smile, just stalking into the locker room and heading straight for Nova and the blonde girl who was sitting beside her and holding out another kleenex, smiling at the freshman.

Kneeling down in front of her, Cadmus touched her knee. "What the hell happened, Nova?"

The blonde girl—Rowan, Cadmus was pretty sure was her name—spoke for his cousin. "She saved Brett's life, that's what."

"I told you to stay out of trouble," Cadmus said with a frown, although even he could hear the affection in his voice. "Are you okay?"

Nova sniffed slightly with a shrug, but it didn't help the nasally sound of her voice. "Better than Brett."

"She's got a broken nose and a pretty nasty burn on her arm," Rowan informed him as she ran a hand down Nova's hair. "But she really did hold her own against the bitch pretty well."

Cadmus couldn't help but grin a little, nodding to his cousin in approval. "Good," he praised, "we'll make a fighter of you yet."

Nova made a face and shook her head. "Not if it means getting my nose broken all the time," she informed him. "I still haven't gotten anyone to set it yet."

Cadmus's eyes widened, and Rowan nodded in confirmation. "I would have done it if it was my nose," she explained. "I don't care if it's crooked, but I'm not risking doing something wrong with hers."
