Love or Retribution?

Chapter 20

What she read on the phone startled as well as confused Nandhini.

"Your services are no longer required, all further payments have been terminated with immediate effect, any more communication on this regard will be not be encouraged."

"What the hell?", Nandhini read those lines again and again confused.

"No more communications, my foot" she screamed and kicked the floor with extreme anger.

She thought for a while on how to proceed, but failed to figure out a sensible solution, the more she read the message, the more angry she became.

"Oh, to hell with you ", she screeched and dialed the number. There was no response for full two rings, even though irritated, she dialed again.

"Hello", Nandhini yelled angrily, when the call got  finally answered.

"What?", the other end answered crisply.

The moment the sound of his voice hit her ears, all her anger got replaced with fear.

"Hello.. Hello... sorry to trouble you sir, but what was that message? " Nandhini stammered due to fear and agitation, but there was only silence from the other end.

"Sir, please, I don't understand, did I make a mistake? I did everything that was asked of me, then why?", Nandhini asked in an almost begging tone.

The silence continued which terrified Nandhini.

"Sir?", she called again with hesitation.

"You took too much time for such a simple task, the purpose got defeated, hence your services are no longer required", the voice answered in a cold tone.

"Too much time? simple task? you should have tried seducing that celibate, then you would have known what a difficult task I have accomplished. No, I am not going to let this go ", she thought to herself angrily.

"I am sorry sir, I cannot accept this, I think I deserve an explanation", Nandhini said in a tone that indicated that she is not going to stand down that easily.

She waited for the voice to say something, but when it didn't she continued.

"You asked me to keep an eye on Bhargav, I did, you asked me to make sure he never leaves Kothagiri, I did, you asked me to make sure he doesn't go on a date, even though I hated myself for doing it I literally seduced and finally guilt tripped him into accepting me, despite my lack of interest, I stayed and tolerated this life and finally, we are getting married in few days, which is kind of life time imprisonment for me, yet I agreed. What more do you expect off of me?", Nandhini argued trying to control herself from breaking down.

The silence continued for sometime, making Nandhini want to scream her heart out.

"The main reason you were recruited was to keep Bhargav in check and make sure that he does not go digging up things that he is not supposed to, but looks like some one has already started to unearth things that I have tried hard to keep buried, so I don't care about Bhargav's involvement any more, hence no use for your service.", the voice answered her calmly.

Nandhini thought for sometime.

"But then you can use Bhargav as leverage right? against whoever is digging those things against you and make them stop? If I stay with Bhargav, I can help you with whatever you need, to do that",  Nandhini blabbered with little excitement and expectation.

"That depends on who is actually doing the digging and whether they are related to Bhargav, if not, no use, for now I don't know who is doing it", the voice replied curtly.
