Black and grey ragged clouds covered the sky. The rain pelted the roofs of houses and shops and occasionally, a bolt of lightening would tear across the sky which was followed by the echo of a thunder.
Today wasn't exactly the best day to be getting dental surgery. I didn't really know what the problem with my mouth was, all I knew was that today I was going to the dentist , getting general anesthesia and waking up with hopefully a perfect mouth.
As much as I tried to convince myself that the procedure was that easy, I couldn't stop thinking of all the possible things that could go wrong.
I was soon distracted by the cold air fogging up the window. I gently wiped my sleeve across the bus window revealing the city of Detroit. It was only seven in the morning, but the city seemed pretty busy already. I looked through the window and appreciated each and every person that I passed. It always amazed me how every single person around you has a life of it's own, and chances are, you will never know what they are. You may have just passed the future president of the United States or maybe a worker who was just fired from his low paying job; but you will never know. All these thoughts and previous sleepless nights made my close my eyes.
I woke up after what seemed like hours, but was in fact a couple of minutes. I was glad I was able to take a nap, because I knew that if I hadn't, then I would have probably died of stress. Luckily, I hadn't slept through my stop. For the following ten minutes, I stared at horizon. I then stood up, stretched my back and rang the bell to get off the bus in the following stop.
The dentist's office was only a block and a half away. As I rang the bell and waited for the response, my nerves really started kicking in. My hands were so sweaty they could have filled a bucket and my breathing was so loud, it almost seemed as if I was acting. The glass door finally made a beeping sound, and I pushed it open. I walked up the stairs and saw the secretary waiting for me with the door open and indicated a seat next to the door for me to sit down.
As soon as I signed in and paid, they called me back. I was brought into the OR room. I removed my sweatshirt and coat and sat in the chair. The nurse put a sterile hat on me and a blue napkin around my neck. She also put a pulse oximetrer and a blood pressure cuff on me.
Sitting in that chair waiting was the most scared I've ever been. I have never had surgery before. I kept looking at the monitor which couldn't stop beeping because my heart rate was really fast.
-"Wow, you really are nervous, aren't you?" The nurse said with a smile
All I could reply was yes.
I then concentrated on my breathing to bring my heart rate down, which helped a bit, but didn't last long, as they quickly put the IV in, which ended up not being such a big deal. Just a little pinch, as if an ant had just bitten me.
They then started a saline drip, I believe. Then they put this plastic thing over my nose and said it was oxygen. By this point, there were a couple of doctors around me and I was just ready for them to put me to sleep.
I closed my eyes because when I went to sleep I wanted make it as natural as possible. I closed my eyes for a few minutes just thinking, but not really coherently.
