It strikes me that, should Detective Diaz ever learn that I have written all of this- should he become aware that I have recounted my time in Cordoba in such detail- that he would probably see it as a betrayal of the little trust we managed to build in my short period of time in the city. What he did, how he handled things, definitely were not in keeping with whatever is left of the 'rulebook' these days. And yet, it was understandable. I only break my silence, and tell the truth of the story now, for the sake of providing insight.

The official record states that we found Manuel and that, after a long interrogation, it was decided that he had no involvement whatsoever with the death of his best friend. Detective Diaz let him go and declared that the trail of evidence had gone cold. The forensic investigator, Doctor Kelleto, further added that the DNA sample of the perpetrator retrieved from the victim had degraded before an analysis could be made. Both declared that the police force would do their best to find the perpetrator, but, in the face of a lack of evidence, they were uncertain what they could do.

This was all a lie.
