Narrator's POV
The bell rings, signaling another day of school completed for Nathan. Now, time to go home.
Home sweet home, at Hawkins's lovely trailer park.
The trailer park meant for the lowest of the low, for the outcasts in Hawkins.
Little do they know...
Nathan's POV
I had just gotten to the trailer park. The school bell rings at 3 and my dad gave me a 3:30 curfew. In other words, I have to book it everyday to get home. It's already like a 25 minute walk away from the school. Add in the time it takes to stop by my locker, I almost never make it on time.
I run from the entrance of the trailer park to my trailer. I look down at my watch.
3:29
I keep running through, but what I don't notice is a figure leaving their trailer and walking to a dog cage in front of me.
I run right into them and we both go crashing to the ground.
"Shit!" I grunt as I hit the ground hard. I wince at the pain it brings to my stomach.
I hear the person groan from next to me.
"Hey, are you okay? I'm so sorry!" I blurt out, crawling over to the red haired girl I knocked over. I roll her over onto her back and pick myself up. Leaning down, I reach out my hands for her to get up. She grabs my hands and I pull her up.
"It's okay. I'm fine." She tells me plainly as she brushes off the dirt on her jeans
"I didn't mean to, I promise! I was trying to get home before 3:30 and I didn't see you. I shouldn't have been running like that. God, I'm so stupid!" I ramble, berating myself for messing up, once again.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm fine, really!" She interrupts me. A confused look shows on her face as she listened to me talk about myself.
I stand there, quiet. Then it hits me...
I look down at my watch.
3:37
"No..." I whisper, slowly backing away from the girl.
I look back at my trailer, not wanting to go, but I know it will be worse if I don't.
I turn and lazily walk to my trailer. Dread fills my thoughts as I think about the punishment I'm about to endure. So many thoughts run through my mind, I don't even pay attention to the redhead watching me still.
My dad never takes these things lightly. Ever since my mom died in that mall fire last summer, he's been different. We used to play football together, every weekend. I wanted to play in high school so he would help me practice. He said I was gonna be the star quarterback.
But now, all he does is drink and smoke. He yells at me when I go out, when I don't do well in school, or even when I don't have the chores done at home. I have to work, clean, shop, and cook. I basically don't have any friends either. I mean it's not like anyone would want to be friends with the weirdo that only has like 3 outfits, smells like smoke, and looks like a bum.
I finally reach my front door and walk inside. Immediately, the smell of smoke and booze fills my nose. I slowly shut the door, trying to be as quiet as possible.
I turn around to find him passed out of the couch.
Must be my lucky day.
I sneak over to the living room and start to pick up the empty beer bottles that litter the table and floor. After throwing them out, I leave to go to my room.
At this point, I know where to step and where not to step in order to stay quiet. Our floors squeak a lot since this trailer is super old.
But even though I know those spots, that doesn't stop new ones from surfacing...
I take one last step right in front of my bedroom door and the floor pops.
"Shit" I mutter under my breath.
I hear rustling from the living room, and now I know he's awake.
"Heyyy." He drunkenly slurs.
"Where have you been Nathan? It's past 3:30!" He yells as he makes his way over to me.
I start to back away from him in the hallway.
"I didn't go anywhere I swear! I was at the trailer park by 3:30 but then I ran into someone when I was running here. I had to make sure she wasn't hurt!" I tried to defend myself.
"You really expect me to believe that stupid story?!?" He shouts at me. I look down to see his fist tightening, making his knuckles turn white.
"It's the truth! I swear!" I scream and beg. My back hits the wall and now I'm trapped.
"That's bullshit!" He screams when he finally gets in front of me.
Before I know it, I'm met with a fist to my face.
I fall to the ground from the force and hold my eye in pain.
"If you ever lie to me again, I swear to God you will regret it. Now hurry up, you have work at the video store. Then you need to go shopping and get food for dinner." He spits at me.
"Okay." I cry on the ground.
He walks away and goes back to the living room.l, but first makes a stop at the fridge to grab a beer.
I pick myself up and go to my room.
I change out of dirty clothes and put on the cleanest jeans I have. I go to my closet to grab the white t shirt I keep separate for work. This is the nicest thing I have for work.
Once I'm dressed, I look in my mirror.
A bruise starts to form on my eye. I sigh knowing that I have no way to cover it, let alone explain it.
After looking in the mirror, I go to grab my jacket and vest. Once I'm all set, I leave my room and head to the front door.
"I'm going to work dad." I tell him as I stand with the door open.
He doesn't even turn around from the TV
I sigh before walking out the door and heading to the Family Video store, failing to notice the red haired neighbor that watches from her porch.
