"Oh, shit!" Tristan smacked himself in the forehead as they emerged into the lighthouse sitting room and he glanced out the windows to see the sun sinking into the ocean. "I completely forgot!"
Maki grimaced. "I think it might be my fault."
Turning to him, Tristan cupped Maki's face and leaned in to kiss him. "No. Never. Here." He shrugged the shirt off his shoulders and draped it over Maki's instead, closing a few of the buttons so he was covered. "I'll be back in a few minutes."
Maki watched with amusement as Tristan hastily righted his trousers and left the house in only his pants and boots to go light the beacons. Tristan's shirt was too big for him but Maki sighed happily as he lifted the dangling cuffs to his nose and inhaled his mate's scent deep into his lungs. Perching on the arm of the sofa in the warm and cozy sitting room, he snuggled into the soft fabric wrapped around him and waited for Tristan to return.
The human seemed surprised when he dashed inside, locked the door, and turned to find Maki still there. "Oh. You didn't have to stay here and wait. You could have gone upstairs." He yanked his boots off and left them by the door, coming over to join Maki.
With a soft smile, Maki pressed his palms to Tristan's gorgeous, muscled abdomen and slid them up his torso to rest on his shoulders. "I haven't been invited into your room yet, love."
Tristan smiled. "Then let's fix that." Capturing one of Maki's hands, he kissed and smiled against his fingers and led him up the stairs to the third floor, where he hesitated a moment, blew out a breath, and then opened the door for Maki.
He smiled fondly as he walked in, noticing right away that Tristan's bedroom was just as comfortable and inviting as the rest of the lighthouse. The fireplace was lit but burning low and Tristan immediately went over to stoke the fire. As with everything else of Tristan's, his bedroom wasn't fancy but it was clean and well-kept. He had a desk just inside the door with an oil lamp on it and Maki's heart warmed to see sketches scattered across the surface. A tall wooden wardrobe sat on the other side of the room, next to a door that Maki assumed led to Tristan's hygiene area.
But the thing that interested Maki the most just then was the wood framed bed occupying most of the room. It looked large enough for more than one person, with thick bedding and a pile of pillows. Curious, Maki walked over to it and lifted the blankets, wondering what was under them. Tritons slept on woven grass mats, but he was certain humans must have something different.
"It's called a mattress," Tristan said softly, coming up behind him. "It's like a huge pillow packed with padding and fiber material.
Maki pressed his hand into it and gasped. "It's soft."
"Yeah. I like my bed soft." Tristan pressed against his back and dipped his head to kiss Maki's nape. "You look so adorable in my shirt, baby." Pulling the large collar aside, he dropped a kiss to the curve between Maki's neck and his shoulder. "I can't believe you're here in my room."
Turning around, Maki caressed Tristan's chest again, his touch lingering over his nipples. "I like your room," he murmured. "It's warm."
"So are you." Tristan stepped forward, trapping Maki against the bed, stroking his thumb down Maki's jaw and then back and forth over his mouth. "So beautiful..."
Maki parted his lips for him and felt his cock twitch. The surge of desire through his veins was intense, making him swoon, and the softness of the bed greeted his bare legs as he dropped down to sit on it.
Tristan's fingers went to the shirt buttons. "Can I...?"
With a quick nod, Maki leaned on his hands to give him better access. His eyes fluttered closed, his head tipped back, and a soft moan fell from his lips as Tristan bared his body once more, kissing his skin as it was revealed.
