Chapter Fifteen

"What do you mean he's gone?!" Annabeth yelled at Gale.

"I mean he's not here." Gale said back. Just then, wings were heard above them, and Astrid came back with Valka.

"I'm not going to be the one to break it to her." Gale said, faking his unconsciousness.

"Where is he?" Valka yelled desperately, searching. "Did you move him?"

"Uh..no." Annabeth began. "He kind of...disappeared."

"What?!" Astrid screamed. Toothless made a yelping noise as he stared at her, and it seemed like he was trying to say something. He displayed to her his tail.

"What happened to him?" Valka demanded, noticing that the bright red fabric was shredded.

"Don't ask me, I was asleep." Katniss said, rubbing her eyes.

Valka paced over the ground, searching for anything. Did he leave? She didn't think he could have, given his state. She noticed a small piece of parchment on the ground. "What's this?" she murmured to herself, picking it up and holding it close to her face. Scanning it, she blanched, and as she dropped it again, she screamed.

"What, what does it say?" Astrid said instantly. She ran over and picked it up. Her reaction was the same, except she didn't drop it.

"What is it?" Katniss asked, a worried look over her face.

"It says," Astrid said hoarsely, and began again. "It says, 'If you ever want to see your chief again, give up your dragons and bow down to me.' "

"So, who has Hiccup?" Katniss asked. Gale began to fakely stir, pretending he had no idea what was happening.

"Drago," Valka whispered, horrified. "Drago Bludvist."

"Is that the guy from before?" Gale asked tiredly, "From the fight?"

"Yeah," Astrid said numbly. "We thought he was dead. He came a few weeks ago, he was trying to take control of all of the dragons. He -- he managed to take control of Toothless. And then he made --"

At this point she began to cry.

"-- he made Toothless kill Stoick." Gale dropped his gaze, everyone was having everything done to them now. It seemed like it would never end.

"We followed him back to Berk, but by then it was too late. He'd gotten every dragon there. We tried to distract Drago's dragon, it was a gigantic thing, and that was what let him control the dragons, while Hiccup tried to get to Toothless. And -- and it worked. Toothless came back, but again, right when we thought it was over, the Bewilderbeast (that was his dragon) fr -- froze Hiccup and Toothless. We still don't really know what happened, but Toothless blew up the ice from the inside. He started shooting the Bewilderbeast, and then the dragons all started coming back. Toothless became the new alpha."

"Well, we can't just sit here and do nothing." Gale said, and he tried with all his might to stand up. He got on his knees, and then fell back down, clutching his chest. Annabeth came over, and she and Katniss helped him back down on his back.

"Right, we, not including me." He said painfully, with uneven breath. His bandages began to bleed through again, and he clutched his chest with a tight grip.

"I told you not to move!" Annabeth scolded him while changing the wraps. He had also broken some of the stitches.

"Sorry, I guess I'll never get used to not being able to do something." He said back through clenched teeth. Katniss shook her head and got the needles back out. The rest of the party left to go discuss what to do. When Annabeth was done, she too left to join the others. Katniss was hurriedly putting in a stitch in Gale's right arm when he saw a slight tear stream down her face.

"What?" He asked. She continued to work, but said in a soft voice, "It's just...you almost died...again. I actually thought you wouldn't wake up this time." She said sadly.

"Hey, I'm not trying to kill myself! It just ends up that way. And I'm not going anywhere, they're going to have to throw all they've got at me before I stop kicking." He assured her. He took her hand and squeezed it tight. She gave a sad smile and laid her head on his shoulder.

"Katniss, are you coming or staying?" Annabeth called back.

"You can go, I'm alright." Gale told her, and she got up and made her way to the group.

"Alright guys, I think we should stick with what I said earlier and, once we figure out all that we can, make a new plan." Annabeth offered. She was doing her best to stay composed, especially since she was worried about what could happen to Hiccup.

"We're not leaving anytime soon, are we?" Katniss asked. Annabeth sighed.

"I have no clue at all." She answered truthfully "I am just thinking that we need to confirm what the creature that attacked them earlier was, and then we can figure out what to do."
