Volker, September 14, 1939

Dear mother:
Hello mother, I hope you are well with my sisters. I am well at the moment, I am in East Prussia, we penetrated the Polish enemy hard, it was a bit tough for the Poles but out of our enemies we are well in general. From what we have been told the Polish army also lacked modern weapons and equipment, had few armored and motorized units so they deployed a few less aircraft than we had most of which were destroyed by the Luftwaffe in the first days of the invasion. Overall they inflicted heavy casualties on us but my comrades and I are doing well, for the moment mother this is the news I have for you. I wish to come back alive and be able to embrace you again, many hugs and kisses to you and my sisters.
