Harry was taken to hospital. Twenty two of the staples were still intact, only three were severed, the wound didn't gape open as bad as he thought. Only by 3cm. Blood had dripped out of him because he is a bleeder. Meaning a person who bleeds too much even from a small cut.The wound was cleaned, the loose staples taken out. There wasn't a need for re suturing again. It was then glued shut and adhesive strips applied on the skin to secure the wound together as not to open again. The area of the wound that had gaped open ran over his belly button, as preventative measure antibiotics were given to Harry before he was discharged home.
Three days after the incident Harry was back in hospital unwell with fevers and headache. He had an infection. Someone with low immunity as him don't need wounds opening accidentally or incidentally. The doctor told Zayn after explaining Harry need to be admitted for two days of intravenous antibiotics.
That was necessary as Harry had chemo due in a week and doctors wanted to avoid postponing that. Cancer doesn't give the body a break, they didn't want to offer it a window to attack somewhere else in Harry's body.
"Baby, stop crying.." Harry sighed running his hand through Zayn's hair.
Zayn was sitting on a chair by Harry's hospital bed, his head bowed down, resting on the bed. "It's my fault." He mumbled inaudible for Harry to hear.
"What did you say?" Harry asked.
Zayn lifted his head to look at him. "If I hadn't stuck my nose where it didn't belong we would be packing for the surprise trip for the kids to Lake District."
"Zee, it is not your fault. It was a freakish accident. If fingers need to be pointed then hands up I'm at fault. How many times since the operation you reminded me to carry the cushion with me all the time, even the kids have been joking I look pregnant and when is the baby due. I mean, I was warned something like this might happen. That the wound could split open and I'd get an infection as a result. And now it's happen, let's deal with it like we always do. Full steam ahead. Okay?"
"Nothing you say would make me feel better. Our plans for the start of summer are ruined. Its like_" Zayn sniffled wiping his wet eyes with back of his hand. "We are supposed to have a week away where we forget about everything and like, have a good relaxing time before you start chemo, get your body, mind and spirit, and for all us, the kids, me, you_ready for what lies ahead, Harry. Now it's like everything has gone horribly pear shaped and I'm to blame.."
"Baby, our plans aren't ruined. The kids have two days before school breaks for summer. We're going away on Saturday anyways, that's in three days. I will be out of here by then. So what if I won't be allowed to ride the Segway and go quad biking as I planned with the kids, that won't spoil anyone's good time. Our children love the outdoors. Maddy and Toni have been talking non stop about going camping since their last school trip to Cumbria. And Zee, with you there I will still enjoy the lovely lakeside view. We rented the best private lodge in the Lake District, isn't it?" Harry tried to pick up Zayn's low mood.
"I won't have fun. Does that count?" Zayn mumbled.
Harry sighed. "Lay next to me_" he shuffled to the side so there was enough space for him.
"No. I'm not going to lie next to you_"
"Come on. I know you want to." Harry teased grabbing Zayn's arm pulling him up. "Don't play hard to get_"
"I said no!" Zayn yelled yanking his arm back, stood up to move away from him. He stood in the corner of the room hiccuping on sobs tears falling down his cheeks.
Harry stared at him, Zayn looked like he hardly had sleep for days. There were bags under his eyes which were red and crying worsened that. Since the incident Zayn's eyes haven't been dry and constantly glistening.
