Once a year me and my mom tried to pay a visit to my cousins in Manhattan. They were both hilariously clever freelance writers. Lisette and Simon lived on the fabulous Upper East Side in a not-so-fabulous crumbling pre-civil war rental that happened to be the one non-brownstone on a block of brownstones. They always seemed embarrassed by this but it still made for an extremely attractive block. Lisette was full of beauty tips like "wear sunscreen year round instead of foundation! Your skin will have the elasticity of an 11 year old!" Simon was very passionate about theater, so he always announced his points very loudly. I admired them greatly. They did the thing all of us suburbanites dream to do. Get up, drop everything, and just move to the big city to pursue something too artistic to sustain the exact big city life they wished to lead.
