7:30 am
I moaned from the tapping- sunlight against my face, wonderd how long I'd been sleeping. I blinked, shut my eyes, blinked again. I yawned, managed to fully open both eyes. "What time is it?"
Managing to sit up, I check the alarm.
"Oh man, its 7:30" taking off the covers I sway towards the bathroom. Barely having enough time to think I take a quick shower and brush my teeth. As I towel dry my hair I quickly check again for the time. "7:35, okay doing good"
on my bed a freshly steamed uniform was waitng for me. It didn't take long to put it all on, just a white-short sleeved colared shirt matched with a plaid skirt stopping at the knee and a pair of knee socks and black polished shoes. Grabbing my bag I rush out the door, downstairs and into the kitchen. Breakfast already on the table, I sit down and grab a plate. "Oh well good morning to you too Sleeping beauty."
Stuffing my face, I smile towards the source of the snarky coment. Coming from no other than my mother, she always has something to say. Next to her Brayden sits chuckling to himself "Mom I don't know what your talking about, I don't see a beauty here."
"Mind your own business dweeb".
"Hey! don't talk to your brother like that.Whats more important is that disaster on your head." She said shoving her hands into my hair.
"Mom please stop running your fingers through my hair."
Chuckling she looks at me. "You think I'm running my hands through your hair, I can barely skip"
"Ha ha, real funny, Mom stop it you never make jokes"
"I made you" she replied.
"Wow I feel the love" I said sarcastically.
"I'll love you even more if that is fixed" she said signalling towards Rita, "please do something about this, I'll drop Brayden off to school."
"Yes Ma'am"
"Oh Rita I told you to call me Christina," she says winking then turns to me. "You Missy, listen to Rita."
"Yes Ma'am" I smile and wave until she leaves.Rita walks over to me and pinches my cheeks. "You know from all the wrong things your mother says, she might actually be right about this one."
Pouting I ask " Is it really that bad?" Hiding her smile she lets out a slight giggle. "I'll fix it."
Shifting all my hair to one side in what felt like seconds there was a series of braids combined into one, then she began pulling the hairs around my loose. Opening the front camrea of my phone, my eyes light up. "Where did you learn how to do that?"
"You know I'm always full of surprises, Janie."
Ever since Rita started working here she made a nickname for everyone. Mine are Janie and Corazon, means heart in spanish, Brayden's is Principito which means Little prince, and Mom's nickname is Reina roja, Rita told me the first day she met my mother, she was dressed in all red. Rita thought that if she said the wrong words my mom might chop her head off. For my dad, Rita wasn't working for us at the time, so she didn't meet him. Getting up from the chair I wrap my arms around her in a tight embrace.
"Thank you" I said, letting go I stretch my hand out towards her. She looked at me all wary eyed, contemplating what she should do. Raising one eyebrow she smirked not before dropping a pair of car keys in my hand.
"Be careful out there." I blow her a kiss before rushing out the door. Okay, its 7:55, I can make it in 5 minutes no problem. Running up to a black SUV I open the car door and put the keys into the ignition and back out of the driveway. Pushing the gas pedal earns me a couple looks from the neighbors, yeah I'm only 17 and its probably illegal for me to be driving without an adult. But my birthday Is in 2 weeks, and not getting to school will be the death of me if my mom finds out, this is obviously because of hitting the snooze button too many times. I speed through stop signs and yellow lights to get there on time.
"The things I do for education."
I mutter. Finally getting into the parking lot, I take my keys and rush inside the front doors. Running up to two flights of stairs wasn't easy at least for someone who hasn't done cardio or any kind of excersise since elementry school and I wouldn't call running under a gigantic rainbow quilt while your classmates uncontrollably flap It up and down excercise. Turning the corner I see sitting against the wall waitng for me, Dakota. Realizing I've arrived she throws her hands in the air.
"Jeez Jane take all the time you need." I never liked getting late to school. It just gives me another reason to stand out. Being known as the daughter of Christina Biddle and knowing that every teenager in this school has seen my mother in lingerie. Including all of their parents is enough for me to die from embarrassment. This has earned My mom and I quite a couple of names. So I try to keep to myself. Opening the door to my pre-calculus class I whisper to Dakota. "Man, I hate this part." All eyes were on us as I closed the door behind me. Whenever I was late to class, none ever murmured. Usually, it was silent. Just rows of eyes peering at me. But today was different, all the girls eyes were glued to the front of the room and the guys were less interested. "Miss, would you mind telling me why you are late to class? ". Is this a substitute? Why is everyone staring at me with pity in their eyes? Who is this guy? Hes wearing a tight black suit. He looks pretty young, maybe early 30s. There was a slight stubble on his chin. Freshly cut and groomed, he sure was intimidating. I bite my lip.
"I just-" I suck at excuses. Turning to Dakota signaling with my eyes for her to come up with something. She was always good at these kinds of things. But I got nothing but a squeal out of her.
"Omigosh! Your Tony Acosta!". Hearing this a grin emerged on to his face.
"Finally someone knows my name." Nudging Dakota I whisper "who is this guy?"
"Are you serious?!-he's the producer for Igneous Heart". Now we have everyones attention, the girls even more disgusted with me for not knowing this information, and the guys felt more relaxed knowing at least not all of the girls know who this guy is.
"Thank you sweetie, but I think I can introduce myself" he said not before giving her a wink. Placing her hand over her heart we make our way to our desks.
"Its true, I am the producer of the all time famous band Igneous Heart."
"Yeah well I've never heard one song from your little band." Said a voice from the back. Looking irritated he explained.
"well the boys just started their music careers from being nobodies to singing in a stadium filled with thousands of screaming fans. "
"What does that have to do with us? "
"Well that's where you come in, our company is holding a contest, the boys and I are going to all fifty states and giving a chance for everyday folk to have a chance do fame." A chuckle escaped Timothy's lips, that guy never knew how to shut up.
"For your information my father owns company's in half of those states, everyone in this class came from the rich, we're not exactly everyday folk" he smirked.
"You see kid you don't understand, this contest is intended for everyone, even rich kids like yourself. You guys are seniors. Your in the stage in your life where you'll go off college or start working immediately. Do you want to live in your parents shoes, or make your own path? " his voice echoed just before the bell rang, everyone remained in their seats even Timothy.
"Please consider entering this contest, we'll be in town for three days, thank you". The second bell rang everyone snapped out of it and picked up their bags. A snap woke me from my thoughts.
"Jane! Come on" grabbing my arm I was being tugged out of pre-calculus.
"What do you have next? " Dakota asked looking a little too excited.
"Free period."
"Then after? "
"Then I have lunch"
"Uh, I want your schedule. I have english but we can skip."
"And why are we skipping?" I think I know where this is going.
"Do you really think I'm gonna sit here knowing that Igneous Heart is in town. The earlier we enter the contest, the bigger chance we'll win."
