Lilly from KCPR entered into the Hive, I suppose it made the impending interview more comfortable, having it in our own home. I was anything but, this was the interview that would cement me as a Honeyboy. I had no idea what Ms. Leif would ask us... would ask me. My relationship with the boys already seems so complicated, hopefully we could keep it together.
We sat in the garage, our rehearsal space, surrounded by the instruments we all hold so dear. The anxiety of the interview only reminded me how comfortable I feel in this room. I know how to make music, I feel most at ease playing my sweet, sweet saxophone, but I still don't feel like a Honeyboy. Would this interview help me fit in?
Lilly sat in front of us, her unblinking blue eyes staring at us. We all sat nervously before her, all of us except for Ari. He was smiling and giggling, ready to be asked all about the band and the boys he loves.
The interview begins with some light questions, it feels organic. The KCPR interviewer asks us how we met and where we got our musical inspiration from. Each of us go off on tangents, barely managing to answer the question to begin with. We are laughing and bouncing off of each other's responses. It feels like we have been a band for a long time, rather than a few days. Lilly laughs along with us, writing down a few of our jokes and semi-serious responses.
The questions start turning towards the band dynamics. Ari, Reese and Nick answer swimmingly, I don't have much to add considering the drama I have caused so far. Matt just nodded along. While Grady smiled, I mostly kept to myself.
I managed to catch Matt's eye during the interview and he winked at me. I was taken aback, I couldn't believe he just winked? I thought he didn't like me but I guess he was warming up. I couldn't help but turn away, my cheeks filling with blood, turning a cherry red color. Noticing this, Lilly asks, "So, what does love look like for the Honeyboys?" She is eyeing Matt and I, making small glances at the others to confirm or deny her observation.
I can feel Grady's stare, my cheeks still are glowing red. I couldn't manage to look at him, I still didn't know how I felt about him, whether he was a friend or a potential lover. I could hear Ari laughing, trying to divert the question. I don't think he was ready to admit to our passionate kiss in San Francisco and I wasn't either.
My feelings were all over the place. Ari, Matt and Grady were all so handsome and I felt like I could see a life with one of them, I just didn't know which one. Ari was so refreshing, always in a good mood and he made me feel like the person I wanted to be, confident and caring. Grady made me feel so safe. He was so sweet and noticed all of the little things. Grady was incredibly thoughtful and talented, we could live a life in musical heaven. Matt was the certified bad boy, he was mysterious and attractive. I could imagine him taking care of me, hating everything else in the world except me. His winked only added to his secretive charm, what was he thinking?
Before the question lingers too long, Nick clears his throat."Well," Nick replies, "Reese and I have something we want to share. We have been meaning to for a while. We are... a couple." Nick and Reese reach for each other's hands, sharing a small smile. They are glowing, I can feel the happiness radiate the entire room. Lilly can't help but look a little surprised, but she looks contentedly upon the newly out couple. "Is it okay if I put that in the interview? I am so incredibly happy for you!"
"Please, we are ready to tell the world." Reese soothed. With that the interview was over.
I was so joyful. Reese and Nick were some of the most lovely people I have ever met. I was so happy that they found happiness with each other. Maybe I would be able to find love in the Hive too...
