The spring of a worn wooden door bounces open as the foot steps of an innocent 10 year old makes her way scarcely to the receptionist desk. She clung to her mothers hand slightly trembling as the pre-audition nerves are hitting her.
She had never preformed here before, nor have auditioned.
She had only started stage acting about a year ago and has done a number of productions since that first core memory was made. She knew theatre was what she was going to work for. This was going to be one of her first pushes.
As the nerves continued their battle with the brain, she took a breath and pushed her purple wired glasses higher up her nose bridge and took one last hopeful breath before disappearing into the house of the theatre.
She had a good feeling about this audition. It felt more welcoming and hopeful than the others she has previously experienced. The shivering of her palms seemed to rest a bit as she spoke her name in the most professional manner a 5th grader could offer.
"Hi!" She gave a warm wave seeming as if she cool, yet an aura of firecrackers were exploding inside her stomach.
"My name is Gracie, and ill be singing—"
The rest of the audition continued on going perfectly swell and a not-so-surprising cast list was released a few days later.
Ensemble.
She wasn't complaining, even though she has always gotten the leads- this was her first time at a new theatre. Perhaps a small role would offer a nice vacation from the burden of memorization.
It wasn't long after that the first read though was announced. She arrived back again a few days later, as about 40 to 60 kids, her own age, flooded the theatre with decorated "High School Musical: Junior Edition" scripts, singing show tunes and dancing to their favorite albums.
Gracie felt obligated to find a new friend. To just jump out of her seat and announce her name for the whole word to know. Not specifically in a selfish way, but excited to be the start of something new.
She looked around to find someone who would seem to match her. Someone she could trust immediately. You see she was just an innocent child at the time, ignorant and blinded from the meaning of trust. Her heart was so big to fill others with her own love, it was pulsing to be pierced.
And that's where our yang joins this tale.
He had walked down the seating isles arms folded, eyes scanning. Beaten maroon converse and a flat brimmed hat sat perfectly upon his Puerto Rican head. He had the thickest black hair anyone has even seen, with tiny curls at the end draping his forehead. His face darker than the yin's with small freckled features scattered across the canvas.
He didn't look like a theatre kid from a blind eye, but hell she sure did find out to be he was the biggest of them all in the vast future. Midnight-spruce wooded eyes connected with the younger's, as for the first time in her life there was a kid who made her heart skip rope. It was at this moment they knew they were a perfect fit. Exactly what the other was looking for.
She smiled as she invited the older over, lightly patting the velvet red cushion chair next to her.
"Hey! My name is Gracie! Who do you play?" She asked with a warm smile, clutching her script tight to attempt to contain her childish excitement.
"Oh I'm just in the ensemble." He responded with an awkward laugh but a genuine smirk leading after.
"Oh sick me too!" Gracie exclaimed as she playfully punched his shoulder and offered her hand for a dab up.
The boy starred for a bit puzzled, but after careful contemplation, he grabbed her hand into his connecting what was made to be forever, for the first time.
"Zach." He had responded to Gracie's first comment. "I can tell you're gonna be a fun one." Zach smiled. It was so warm he could melt a desert with the childish look. Innocent and happy.
"Nice to meet you Zach." She returned his expression as hands stayed connected.
"We're gonna be best friends I just know it!"
