Chapter Thirteen: Eye of the Storm

The barrier containing Nick and Ella was breaking. The warlock hammered deeper into it, shattering it more and more, cracks appearing on all sides—it wouldn't stay up for much longer.

Zoey broke a sweat, exhausted from the fight, but she couldn't stop moving.

Jackie kept firing the plasma gun, but the warlock just wouldn't hold still. "Dammit! This is so fucking hard to control!"

Morgan floated above, dropping Riley in their place. "Jackie, right? Hand me that, I got it."

"Uh, sure." Jackie passed it up to them, and as Morgan took it, they tossed it to the side. "Hey!"

"That thing isn't gonna do shit. Let me try." Morgan held their hands out, an explosion of magic tossing the warlock away from the barrier as it shattered. "Oh. Shit."

Nick and Ella fell to the ground from the burst, picking each other up. "What do we do now?!" Ella called, looking at Nick's face, which had gotten bloodier.

"Keep attacking!" Xudio called to them, grabbing River's hand. "I have an idea."

Nick panted, feeling heavy and dizzy. "We can't keep doing this, something's got to happen!" Something was happening. They tasted blood, they smelled it, and more blood spilled every time they used their powers. Déjà vu hit them like a ton of bricks.

Alistair and Wylie came over, hands whooshing with energy as Wylie looked to the both of them. "We'll hold it off."

"Geez, Nick, you look awful," Alistair stated.

"Thanks." Nick rolled their eyes, taking Ella's hand. "We're gonna start running."

The wind picked up slightly. "...Okay."

And they went off. Alistair and Wylie held it back, and Zoey had a hold of it as well. Matilda and Pyro ran down, standing beside them both and pushing it back, but it broke free quickly.

"Shit!" Matilda hissed, watching as Nick and Ella's escape became a chase. "Everyone, go!"

"Where's Xudio and River?!" Pyro called.

"Right here!" River called, steering a motorcycle.

"Pyro, can you drive? Please. Start driving. Not them." Xudio made room for him.

"Jesus, alright!" Pyro hopped on, revving it barely. "How the fuck should I know how to drive this thing?"

"It's easy, just push that pedal." Morgan floated above them, holding Riley. Matilda, Alistair, Wylie and Jackie had already ran ahead.

"This one?" And Pyro shot away at full speed.

"Yep! You got it! Keep going!"

"Morgan." Riley looked up barely.

"...They'll be fine!"

Zoey zipped from corner to corner, hopping in and out of portals she was creating on the fly, sending the warlock back a few steps with her. It slashed at her, but it kept missing. Zoey was always once step ahead of this thing.

She waved her hands, sending it through a portal that tossed it directly into the side of a building. She smiled, wiping sweat from her brow, and continuing to run in Nick and Ella's direction.

"Pyro, do you know what the hell you are doing?!" Xudio called over the whipping wind.

Pyro was riding on a railing, perfectly balancing somehow. "Nope, but it's working! Hang in there!"
