Lo'ak's voice wakes me from my sleep, "Laya, get up! We have training."

I rub my eyes and glance over to see Neteyam still asleep.

Looking up, I see Lo'ak's frown. I quickly get up, apologizing, "Sorry."

He simply looks at me and replies, "Yeah," before walking off towards the beach.

I let out a sigh and nudge Neteyam, urging him to wake up. He groans and asks, "For what?"

"We have training, you idiot," I say irritably.

He opens his eyes and grins, "Oh, right." I roll my eyes in response. "Get up, let's go."

Neteyam looks at me and asks, "Why are you in a mood?" I simply say, "I'm not."

He gets up and insists, "Yes, you are."

As I start to leave the pod, Neteyam grabs my arm. I turn around and meet his gaze. He asks me what's wrong, and I look at him, saying, "Just Lo'ak being Lo'ak." He clenches his jaw in understanding.

I nod and reply, "Let's go." But before we leave, Neteyam stops me again. I turn around, and he says, "I want to talk to you about last night, later, okay?"

I nod, "Okay," and we make our way to the training circle.

Kiri remarks, "Well, nice of you guys to join us." I laugh and say, "Yeah, he wouldn't get up," lying about Neteyam.

Everyone chuckles except for Lo'ak.

Tsireya announces, "So, we will be teaching you guys how to breathe underwater better and then how to ride an ilu."

I look up and sarcastically say, "Great."

Tsireya instructs, "So, find your partners."

Lo'ak is already partnered with Tsireya.

I walk over to Neteyam and ask, "Partners?" He smiles and replies, "Obviously."

I glanced up to see the older boy who had smiled at me earlier when we arrived. His confident voice broke through the air, "Hey, Laya, want to be my partner? It would be better to train with someone who is experienced."

I was taken aback, my mind racing to the partnership I had already established with Neteyam. Trying to find my words, I stammered, "Oh, I was partners with Neteyam."

the older boy insisted , a hint of charm in his voice, "Come on, I'll give you back. I'll just help you."

He turned to Neteyam, seeking his permission, "Do you mind if I steal her for a little?"

I glanced at Neteyam, awaiting his response. He looked at me and nodded, his voice carrying a hint of resignation, "As long as she wants to go, then yeah."

Feeling guilty for leaving Neteyam behind, I apologized, but he simply waved me off, assuring me, "Go, I'll be fine."

I started walking behind the older boy, my mind racing with conflicting emotions.

"He's talking to me," I thought to myself, unable to ignore the fluttering excitement in my chest.

As we settled into a circle, my attention was drawn to the older boy's instructions, "Okay, breathe from here," and then he paused, "I overhear someone say, 'Lo'ak, your heartbeat is fast.'"

Curiosity got the best of me, and I glanced over to the girl who had spoken. With a stern expression, she advised, "Try to focus."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes, feeling a mix of annoyance and embarrassment. "Oh my god," I muttered under my breath.
