When they arrived in front of the large electric fence Joel had entered the code and they had crossed the deserted city to the large house of Bill and Frank in which they had entered easily given that the door was open.
"What the fuck ?" Ask Ellie looking at the house.
Joel walked into the grand entrance : "Bill ?"
"Frank ?" Lara asked looking at the adjoining rooms.
The Miller man turned in Ellie's direction."You stay there. Ya hear anything, you see anything yell." Puis l'homme s'est tournée vers Lara. "I take the floor."
The woman having no other choice she nodded and walked away with her gun in hand while Ellie's voice echoed behind her: "What if they're gone ?" The brunette didn't hear Joel's response and walked through the dining room as moldy food lay on the table. She opened a door and searched the room from top to bottom but no trace of Bill and Frank, she then searched the rest of the ground floor but no sign of life so she returned to the dining room where she caught Ellie sitting in a chair with a letter in her hand.
"What is this ?"
« It's from Bill, to whomever, but probably Joel. Came with this.
The young girl slid a key across the dusty table and handed the time-yellowed piece of paper to Lara who took it and was beginning to read it silently when Joel arrived and asked the same question as the woman who had finally read for the man.
"August 29, 2023. If you find this. Please do not come into the bedroom. We left the window open so the house wouldn't smell, but it will probably be a sight. I'm guessing you found this, Joel, because anyone else would've been electrocuted or blown up by one of my traps. Take anything you need. The bunker code is the same as the gate code but in reverse. Anyway I never liked you, but still it's like we're friends. Almost. And I respect you. So I'm gonna tell you something because you're probably the only person who will understand. I use to hate the world and I was happy when everyone died. But I was wrong, because there was one person worth saving. That's was I did. I saved him. Then I protected him. That's why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do, and God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way. I leave you all of my weapons and equipment use than to keep Lara and-" The woman stopped feeling the words blocking in her throat, she raised her head to Joel who delicately took the paper from her hands.
The man read the last words and Lara could feel his anger from where she was.
« Stay here ! » Joel ordered before walking out the back door with his fists and jaw clenched.
"So... You knew them ?"
"Yes..."
A long silence ensued so the two girls remained silent and Lara played with her butterfly knife until Joel returned.
