𝐎𝐎1 . . . chapter one

OOO. ( chapter one ) ! ————————

  Briar wasn't exactly expecting to begin the day with Tom Riddle sneering at one of her friends in the cafeteria during breakfast - but then again, she never typically expected most things that happened through her daily life at Hogwarts. Sirius Black, one of her best friends had gotten the highest grade in their 'Defence against the Dark Arts' exam and Tom was incredibly angry about it.
"You think you're so high and mighty then, Black?" Tom pointed his wand at Sirius, his other hand closed in a tight fist at his side, "I challenge you to a duel."

The cafeteria went silent as Tom spoke. He mostly kept to himself but when someone took his spot at the top of the class, all hell broke loose.

"Listen Riddle," Sirius put his hands up in surrender "It's not like I asked to get a higher grade than you did. I was pretty shocked myself." The Gryffindor boy chuckled as Tom grew more infuriated. In his eyes, Sirius was mocking his abilities; and he despised that. Tom walked towards Sirius slowly with a small smirk on his face, he aimed his wand at Sirius and whispered, "Tarantallegra."

The whole cafeteria burst into laughter, including Sirius' friends, as the boy's legs started to move, dancing uncontrollably. Although she attempted to conceal her amusement, Briar giggled quietly with her hand over her mouth. Tom glanced over at her and looked away so quickly that she almost thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. James scoffed and turned to look at the proud Tom Riddle, "Okay, he's had enough!" He crossed his arms over his chest, annoyance etched onto his usually calm face.

Tom simply rolled his eyes, Potter was always up in his business. He sighed and grumbled as he noticed Professor Slughorn walking towards him from the other side of the great hall, "No one ever lets me have any fun." He groaned as Slughorn looked at him with a 'You know better' kind of look and pulled a straight face. "Finite Incantatem," Tom waved his wand as Sirius' legs stopped moving. The brunette was sweating and almost passed out from exhaustion, he collapsed back into his seat and took a big gulp of water, pouring the rest on his head.

"Sirius!" Lily shouted, standing up immediately and wiping her uniform "You got water on me, you daft git!" Remus and Briar looked at each other, tears in their eyes as they attempted to hold in their laughter. "Great," Lily sighed "Now I have to go and change my bloody uniform and classes start in 10 minutes."

James shot her a confused look, "Merlin, Lils. How long does it take you to get dressed? Need a house elf to do it for you?" He cackled at his poor joke before being cut off as Lily scowled at him, smacking him in the head with her hard-backed potions book. 

"I hope you know that you're lucky you have friends, James." Lily spared him one last irritated glance before walking out of the great hall to go to the Gryffindor common room. Briar sighed as she watched everyone go back to their private conversations, she sat with her head in her hands for a few minutes as she watched Tom talking to Regulus at the Slytherin table. Remus nudged her and wiggled his eyebrows at her with a knowing smirk. "Remus, keep your trap shut. I'm sick of you all, anyway we've got a Potions class to get to." Briar gave them all one last smile before she walked off, her roughed-up satchel with her books in it at her side, her hand held a firm grip on the strap as she walked by the Slytherin table to exit the cafeteria.

She looked at Tom from the corner of her eye, slowing down for a second before Regulus noticed her and gave her a smug look as she sped up again; quickly moving out of the large spruce doors.

'I really have to learn how to be discreet,' Briar thought to herself, 'If I don't I'll only keep embarrassing myself.'
