Severely burned

(Leona's P.O.V.)
I got out my own car and kept the door open so Koda could hop out aswell. Before looking up at the house that stood proud and tall in front of me. I never much cared for these big houses. After all, why spend so much money just for some empty rooms. I just want enough space for me and my dog. I lowered my eyes to Tommy who was walking out of his house towards me and Koda. He bowed down to greet Koda with a pat.

He stood back up and turned to take a look at my car

He stood back up and turned to take a look at my car. "A Rolls-Royce 40/50 Phantom" he nodded, "you prefer comfort above speed". His observation was correct. The Rolls Royce is more about the ultimate luxury and comfort on wheels. While a Bentley is faster and more performance-oriented. Most people would say that both are good cars and that it comes down to personal preference. But I will never be caught in a Bentley. Because a Bentley drives like a fucking wooden plank and if it breaks down it really is broken and not an easy fix. "Where is your car?" I signed at him. But rolled my eyes when he raised an eyebrow in question. I pointed to him and then at my car. It took him a second to understand but eventually he got it. "The Bentley is this way" he said turning on his heel. I followed him to his Bentley 6 ½ Litre Vanden Plas 4. With my hand I motioned for him to unlock the hood of the car. He got inside and pushed the button that would unlatch the hood. I heard the latch unhook and I lifted the hood up. My eyes immediatly scanned over the engine, the springs, the brakes, in search of the problem. I leaned forward to have a closer look. "Find the problem?" Tommy questioned, which I ignored as I walked around to the side of the car.

(Tommy's P.O.V.)
I watched Leona walk around the car to the side. She took her long coat off before laying it down on the ground and slightly underneath the car. I noticed she had a leather shoulder gunbelt, with two colt revolvers in each holster. But I also saw that she wore some sort of necklace but she had hid it underneath her dress shirt, so I could not tell what kind it was. She noticed me staring and just quirked an eyebrow before she went down to lay on her coat to take a look underneath my Bentley. Koda seemed interested and wanted to help out, Leona did not appreciate her dog's help and slightly pushed her away. I couldn't exactly see what Leo was doing but she eventually came from underneath the car. Her hands slightly covered in grime as she walked back to the front. Leaning over she reached to the engine block before signaling with her hand for me to start the car. I did what she asked and the Bentley stuttered but didn't start. She huffed and put her hands on her hips, not caring that her dress shirt would get covered in grease and thought for a second. Before making her way over to me. I had thought she would ask me to get out, but she didn't. Instead she leaned over me to take a look. I didn't know exactly what she did but when she went back to the front and signaled for me to start the car again. The Bentley fully started up and kept running. She closed the hood and walked to me and extended her hand. I nodded and grabbed a clip of money from my jacket. She retrieved it and quickly took a flip through it, counting the money. She extended her hand out again telling me she wanted more. I shook my head and chuckled before handing her a few more.

She gave a slight bow accepting the amount of money as she put it into her pocket

She gave a slight bow accepting the amount of money as she put it into her pocket. Before grabbing her coat from the floor and dusting it off.

I poured some liqour into the glass that stood in front of Leo. I was hesitant at first to ask the question. I had no idea how she would react. After all, she likes to keep her private life just that, private. And anyone who questioned her about it would just get silence and a death glare in return. It was clear that she went through a few things. Of course she was going to make some enemies along the way. She is a smart woman and a smart woman is beautifull. And a beautifull woman is a dangerous woman. And a dangerous woman is an intimidating woman. And those reasons alone are to much for some.  It clearly mattered to her to become intimidating in this world of men. Maybe that was the reason why she wasn't letting anyone in. After all you can't force a flower to bloom, it does so at its own pace, under just the right conditions. I suppose thats why her thorns are there. Whether you could handle her or not, you sure as hell would feel her wrath. And right now, I was either going to be stupid or brave for touching her thorns. She was already having her suspicion and answered it with a look that told me to not even think about it. "So which is it? Psychological or physical?" I questioned, immediatly earning a glare that could kill.  Koda sat upright and watched me carefully. Clearly the dog felt the change of emotion in her owner's body and went into protection. Leona snapped her fingers and Koda laid down. I watched the woman in front of me hesitate and her jaw clench. Then she pulled the collar of her dress shirt a bit forward and pulled her necklace from around her neck before throwing it onto my desk. I leaned forward to grab the necklace. But it was not a necklace, it was a pair of dog-tags. With some key-information about the owner stamped on them. Typically a service number, a front and surname, the regiment, and sometimes battalion and rank. Religion was also indicated for the proper burial place when the soldier had passed. Initially, I had thought it would've been Alfie's tags. But that was further from the truth. The information was as followed.

"You served in the war" I said nodding impressed. "I thought woman weren't allowed to serve?". She didn't sign nor write something down. Instead she reached for my peaked cap and put it on. I will admit that the cap looks good on her. She then began pushing her hair underneath the cap. It was clear that she had disguised herself in the war. And she did it so well that she even managed to become a sergeant major. "Doesn't explain why you don't talk" I told her. She gave me an annoyed look, clearly showing me she wasn't done explaining. She grabbed the pen and notepad from my desk and started writing. It didn't take long before she eventually handed me the book and I began to read. She didn't write much but it was enough information to understand.

- Battle of Loos (1915)
- Hill 70 and the formidable Hohenzollern Redoubt.
- 13th battalion.
- Chlorine gas

I sighed as I understood what had happened to her. She had fought the Battle of Loos where almost 60.000 soldiers where killed. The British artillery had failed to cut the German wire before the attack. The engineers manning the poison gas cylinders warned against using the gas because of the weakness and unpredictability of the wind. But it was overruled by some General and the gas was used. In some places the gas drifted back into the British lines and caused more British than German casualties. Although Leona survived the gas, the trauma effected her. My guess is that the gas severly burned her vocal cords, although she didn't specify it.
