Candice Swanepoel was a famous model back in the day. So famous, in fact, that there were two of her clones among the students in the school. Candy and Cindy were both in my Clone History class, and acted as though they were twins. I guess in that regard, they were, and it helped them to feel a little better to have a sibling in the school. They were also very nice, which didn't hurt, and sat next to me in the class.
"Are you okay?" Candy asked from my left.
"You seem pretty down," commented Cindy.
I sat there silently for a moment. Both of them were supposed to be married this summer, and neither was looking forward to it, but I'd never asked if they thought about how to get out of it. "Are you both getting married this summer?"
"I guess so." Cindy said with a frown, while Candy just shrugged. "I don't have many options."
"Why couldn't you get a job? Be a model?" I wondered.
They shared a look really quick before Candy spike up. "We've talked about it. Not just us, but a couple of the other girls that came from models. I don't know if we can run that risk. We have no money, no transportation, no contacts. If we say no, then we don't even know where to start. If we had someone who could give us a few months, or maybe a year, to get ourselves settled then we could, but right now we don't have that."
"Besides, half of the models are holographs these days," Cindy added.
"Okay, fine. But what if you could do anything else. Like get a job, or move wherever you like?"
"I guess I would have to think about that. I don't want to get married, but there is a lot of money involved." Candy was gnawing on her lower lip now.
"Cindy, I thought you were dating Lane?" Lane was in the possible clone group, because she was just a stunning girl with auburn hair and a nice hourglass figure. She was one of the girls in school that made me feel better about not having a supermodel physique. I knew she looked great, so I didn't worry as much.
"I am, and she hates the situation. She doesn't even know what she's doing after school, her family has barely spoken to her about it," Cindy said sadly. "But I'd rather stay with her."
This wasn't making me feel any better. "What if we all went somewhere together and got jobs and shared a place?"
"Do you have a car?" Candy asked.
I didn't, no. But would Zero give me a ride? Would she join me or let me stay at her place? Would Cindy and Candy be okay living out in the world? My thoughts were interrupted by the teacher, Mr. Bowers, entering the room.
"Alright ladies, settle down!" he said loudly. "Can anyone tell me who – " His question was cut off from a harsh blaring coming from the speakers in the ceiling, and everyone jumped in alarm. We usually had several alarms through the year, though this wasn't a fire drill, it was one of the intruder alarms that made it even more stressful. Mr. Bowers looked at his desk calendar with a frown, then turned pale. "Okay! Everyone to the cafeteria! You know the drill!"
Indeed we did, though his reaction had the twins and I exchanging nervous glances. Was this not a drill? I gripped both their hands tightly as we made out way through the halls and to the cafeteria. With only two classes of students left in the school instead of the original five, there was plenty of room to sit, so we just grabbed an empty table. We weren't alone long, as Lane quickly came and sat next to Cindy, wrapping her in an embrace. I could tell that was love, as she never had a problem telling the two of them apart, where I had to look the ribbons in their hair daily to figure it out. Candy always had Red, while Cindy changed hers up.
