The next day started early, way earlier then mornings did in the prison I was kept in. I woke up to the sound of the other nurses chattering and walking around to get ready for the day. I slowly sat up and stretched for a second, standing up afterwards to get ready. After I dressed in a clean nurse uniform, I looked around trying to find somewhere to fix my hair and brush my teeth. Finally finding a single mirror nailed into a post holding the tent up, I walked over but realized I didn't have a brush or pins for my hair or even something to brush my teeth. I silently sighed to myself and looked down to my feet. The chattering in the tent stopped abruptly causing me to look up to see James looking around. When his eyes fell on me a smile spread across his face and he started walking towards me.
"Good morning Betty. I realized last night that I forgot you would need some other necessities to get ready in the mornings, so I brought you a hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste but unfortunately I was not able to find any clips or pins for your hair." He said while handing me the items.
"Thank you James." I smiled, softly taking the items from his hands.
"I'll wait outside the tent. Someone wants to meet you." He said and turned around to leave.
I watched him leave and after he was through the flap of the tent I set some of the items down before looking back up to the other women around me to ask something, quickly realizing all eyes were on me. I gulped nervously and decided to just brush my teeth and ask for clips to borrow in a minute. After brushing my teeth thoroughly I cleared my throat and looked up at the other women again.
"Do any of you have a clip or a couple pins I can borrow, please?" I asked nicely. Some of them just looked at me not saying anything. I debated on just leaving my hair down after brushing it but some people thought that wasn't lady like. After a minute a woman came up to me and handed me a little baggy that held pins in it. "Thank you."
"Those are extra from the nurse that was here before you. She must have forgot them when she transferred to another infantry." She said.
"Oh well thank you." I smiled at her before she walked away. I looked back in the little mirror and put my hair in a little bun on the back of my neck. After I put the items away I smoothed out my uniform and went to walk to the tent entrance.
Walking through and to the outside, I squinted at the bright sun, letting my eyes adjust for a second. When I could finally see again I looked around for James, finding him a few feet away talking to another nurse with a smile on his face. He looked away for a second, looking towards the tent like he was looking for someone.
Duh he's looking for you
A look that almost seemed like he was giving up flashed across his face for a second before he finally caught my eye. Once he saw me his eyes looked like they lit up, saying something to the nurse and walking away. She turned and watched him walk towards me a scowl coming on her face.
"Betty." He greeted with a smile.
"James" I greeted in the same tone and a small smile. "You said someone wanted to meet me? Should I be worried?"
"No no. He's my best friend. He's just curious about the woman that showed up near our camp and what she is up to." He explained with a light chuckle.
"I'm not here to cause problems. I just needed to get out of there." I said.
"I know that but he just wants to make sure of that. He's not the one we need to worry about, it's Agent Carter. You might remember her from yesterday before you ran out of the tent."
"The woman that accused me of being a spy and told you to watch me?" I asked with a teasing look on my face.
"Yes that one" He laughed before stopping at the tent we ate in yesterday, grabbing a plate and handing it to me. "You should eat before we get there."
I grabbed it and slowly took a bite, still not used to eating in front of people. After a few minutes of just standing there, James looking out over the camp and me slowly eating, I was finished. I went to go put the plate away but James stopped me and grabbed it from me. He walked away and put it up for me. We started walking to wherever we were meeting his friend.
"Bucky. You're late." The blonde haired man from yesterday said.
Bucky?
"I know Steve. I wanted to make sure Betty ate." James explained going to point towards me but realized I was hiding behind him. He smiled softly at me to say it was okay before reaching his hand out for me to grab. I hesitantly grabbed his hand, he gently squeezed in a reassuring manner. I walked out from behind him and smiled at Steve.
"You must be Betty?" He asked. I nodded. "I'm Captain Steve Rogers." He introduced himself, holding his hand out for me to shake. I gently placed my hand in his, he gave it a small shake before releasing it. " I'm supposed to make sure you aren't here to kill us all but I can tell that you don't intend to harm anyone here. If you need anything, come find me or Buck here, okay?"
"Yes sir." I said with a nod.
"No need for that, just call me Steve." He smiled. "Buck stay with her today and help when she needs it, okay?" He said to James before walking away.
James turned around, which made me turn with him since our hands were still locked together. We started walking towards the medic tent. I couldn't help but to chuckle to myself, hoping James didn't here me. All hope was lost when we stopped and he let my hand go.
"What is so funny Betty?" He asked with a light chuckle.
"Bucky? Where'd that terrible nickname come from?" I laughed.
"My middle name is Buchanan. Steve just calls me Bucky." He smiled.
"Oh sorry. I probably shouldn't have laughed at that." I looked down, ashamed I laughed at his childhood nickname. James gently put his index finger under my chin and lifted it up to make me look at him.
"It's okay. I like hearing you laugh, it's kind of cute." He said with that same damn smile on his face. "Now lets go before we're even later."
Cute? Did James just say my laugh was cute? Am I dreaming? Do I need to pinch my-
"Betty?" James asked curiously, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Right lets go." I said walking a head of him but he quickly caught up to me.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes. Just don't want to cause another scene."
The rest of the walk was silent, once we reached the medic tent James grabbed my hand stopping me from walking any further. I turned to face him.
"Did I say or do something to make you uncomfortable?" James asked a hint of worry in his voice.
"No. I just don't think I can take someone who's middle name is Buchanan seriously." I joked to lighten the mood but instantly started to worry that he would get upset at the joke. But when he started laughing my worrying stopped and I joined him in his laughing fit. Everyone around us looked at us like we were crazy. I stopped laughing and started thinking too much, but James hand squeezing mine drug me out of my spiraling thoughts.
"Hey, you okay?" He asked cautiously.
"Yes. Yes sorry. I just can't remember the last time I laughed that much." I softly smiled at him. He squeezed my hand again.
"I'm glad my middle name was the cause of it." He chuckled. " Now lets get to work." He said starting to walk into the medic tent.
"James?"
"Hmm?"
"Is Steve the only one that calls you Bucky?" I asked carefully, not wanting to overstep.
"Mostly yes. But you can call me Bucky too, if you want."
"I won't be overstepping if I do?"
"Not at all sweetheart." He said with a smile.
