Beth woke up with sore legs and a headache. She only slept for about one hour since she just couldn't get more sleep even if she tried. She slept in a chair that had its back against the wall, so she was facing Joel and Tess, and used her raincoat as a blanket.
When Beth got up to stretch, Joel and Tess immediately looked back as if they thought it was some infected or something. "Morning" Beth said to the two adults, who just gave her a nod. She quickly sat down again and ate a bit of the little food she packed. To be fair, Beth didn't know she would be embarking on this weird journey with three unknown people.
They watched as Ellie slowly woke up. She was sleeping on top of some grass as sunrays passed through the wrecked ceiling. Beth thought it looked sort of poetic. By the way, Beth was still trying to make up her mind as in how the heck could Ellie have been bitten and still be alive.
"Morning" Ellie said, seeing Joel with a gun pointed at her. "Do I look like I'm infected?"
"Show us your arm" Joel ordered. Even though Beth didn't really like his tone, she understood where he was coming from and that he's probably just scared.
"Yeah, it's not getting any worse, is it?" Ellie asked with a sigh, rolling up her sleeve. "If we're out in the open city, why aren't we getting swarmed?"
"Don't worry about that" Joel said, in his monotone voice.
"Well, I'm gonna" Ellie said, before taking a look around and seeing Beth looking at her. Beth just gave her an awkward smile and went back to eating.
"What was Marlene doing with an infected kid?" Tess asked Ellie.
"I'm not infected." Ellie said, before taking a pause. "She found me after I was bitten".
"And she didn't shoot you" Joel added.
"Clearly not" Beth mumbled in a sarcastic way, yearning a «shut the fuck up» look from Joel.
"She locked me up and had her guys test me every day to see if I was getting sick" Ellie explained.
"Test you how?" Tess asked.
"I have to pee" Ellie said, trying to dodge the question.
"Test you... how?" Tess said, this time more firmly.
"They'd make me count to 10 and hold out my hand and then keep it steady. But, you know, I think what really impressed them was the fact that I didn't turn into a fucking monster" Ellie explained in a rude tone. Beth didn't blame her; Ellie was right in this situation. "Now can I please?"
"Fine. Back there. You can find a spot" Tess said, before tossing Ellie some old magazine. "And here. Tear out a few pages".
"There's not gonna be anything bad in here?" Ellie asked.
"Just you" Joel responded, making Beth silently chuckle.
"Oh, funny" they hear Ellie say, and then she's completely gone.
