"I think we should take a break."

experiencing some issues, and now the person you love is more interested in someone else. As he spoke those words, you couldn't help but feel like it was a breakup speech. Your partner of two years suggested that it might be best for both of you to take a break while sitting in his truck at a random gas station miles away from your shared home on what was supposed to be date night. The evening had taken an unfortunate turn when he flirted ceaselessly with the waitress who seemed far more attractive than yourself. , during one such exchange, he knocked over the table spilling red wine all over your white dress which caused you to run into the bathroom in tears feeling as though this day could not get any worse since your writing career wasn't going well either and friends and family weren't giving you the attention you give them. You looked back at him with teary eyes convinced that he would soon deliver news of ending things between you both.

You huffed as he attempted to wipe away your tears and said, "I'm sorry, but this is for the best. So call an Uber to come and get you." The audacity of him made you rush out of his truck. The waterworks really started to flow as he drove away. You didn't have a coat, and your phone had a 5% battery life.

You remember your bestfriends words.

Philip's accuracy pierced your heart as you recalled his words. He, your confidant and cherished friend, was once the best thing in your life. The intimacy between you two surpassed platonic boundaries until a disagreement caused a drift in your relationship. Recently, rumors circulated that he had proposed to his fiancé - though it pleased you on some level, it also pained you deeply. Now stranded without transportation or support from an unsatisfactory partner, shivers ran down your spine as despair set in upon sitting on the bench alone with nothing but thoughts to keep company. Unaware of what was happening around you, a black jeep pulled into the parking lot unnoticed by you. You were scared to look at your reflection but did so anyway. You were horrified, your mascara was all over your face and your nude lipstick was smudged.

After putting away the mirror and gathering your belongings, you noticed a jeep idling nearby. Puzzled, you didn't see anyone get out. Your mind was preoccupied and it took a bit of coaxing before you worked up the energy to start your journey home. Suddenly, the jeep door opened across the street and you grabbed your bag, giving a friendly wave before beginning your walk.

"Yeah... Yeah, loverboy, I'll fix your problems, you're a fuc-" Whoever was speaking had a southern accent, funny you noticed that because you love accents. Especially blondes, accents, and abs. More like Philip, but you get the point.

You scurried away with a light tapping of your shoes against the pathway. Suddenly, a pounding of boots commenced behind you, which instantly had your mind racing. In an effort to get out of there quicker, you picked up the pace, only to have a strong grip take hold of your arm and yank you backwards into them. You instantly froze up and let out a startled yelp, but it was quickly muffled by the hand now covering your mouth.

Your heart leaped a few beats as you anxiously turned to look at him. It was Philip. "Doll, calm down; it's me. " The smooth accent you never thought you'd hear again. Your eyes began to water and jumped into his embrace.  Philip grabbed you and held you tight, fearing if he didn't squeeze you he would lose you again.

"He... br-" You tried to explain but your breathing was labored and you felt like throwing up from all of the crying you were doing.

"Don't I'll already know," Philp reassured you and pulled you along to his jeep. He opened up the door, and he helped you climb inside. He also gave you his jacket, as you were wrapped up in the fabric. Philip walked into the gas station.  It still smells like him, he obviously hasn't changed his cologne.  He walked back out with water and your favorite snacks.  He climbed back into the jeep and drove off, you shivered from being nervous and Philip turned up the heat.

"um... I guess thanks for coming to my rescue," you said, a frown on your face. He responded by placing a comforting hand on your thigh and giving it a gentle squeeze. You reached out and intertwined your fingers with his, and the two of you simply enjoyed the view of the stars above. you gazed up at the stars above and longed to break the tense peacefulness.

"Don't mention it. I was livid when he called me. How could he do that to you." Philip huffed and you knew he was frustrated because he tighten his grip on your hand.

"Your stayin' with me tonight." He told you and flicked on the turn signal left.

"Are you certain? You have already done so much for me," you started to say, but you were interrupted. "I have asked you to stop worrying, I'm already strained," he grumbled and you drifted back to gazing out the window. The remainder of the journey was filled with tension, yet you weren't in the car for that much longer.

You two made your way up to Philip's ranch and couldn't help but notice his well-defined arms - almost as big as your head. You climbed up the stairs and watched as Philip rummaged in his pocket for the key. You decided to break the silence, wanting to start a  conversation.

"Are you still a Captain?" You asked fluttering your lashes.  You knew he liked that.

"Uh. No, I took the commander job." He said and pulled you inside. You admired his space, it really suited him.

" is your fiance' home, I'd hate to barge in." You prayed she wasn't, because you could feel the feelings coming back for him.

"no. we spilt up, a few weeks ago, but we're talking." You felt your heart drop for him, yes you still wanted him but you wanted him happy.  "I hope you two work out." You said and gave him a hug.

He looked down at you and smirked. "What if I don't want to." He whispered in your ear and now you were confused.

"What?" you asked and he shook his head.

"Just kiss me," he said and he leaned down for a kiss. you closed your eyes and fell right into the kiss.  He broke the kiss and explained how she had cheated on him and he really didn't want her back.

"After all these years I just want you."
