"Mum?" I called out as I opened the door. I couldn't hear any type of movement or see anything so I had no idea if she was even home.
"In the kitchen." My mothers short response was cold, her voice sounded hoarse like she had been crying.
"Mum, what's wrong?" I noticed my mums puffy face as soon as I stepped foot into the room. I immediately knew something was up.
"It's your father.." Mum started out, and that is when I knew that I was never going to be happy, my happiness couldn't even last for 2 fucking days. "He followed us to Adelaide.. he doesn't know where we are.. but he has people out there looking for us.. people who are going to act like they're close to us, but they're just working for him."
"So what? My friends could be working for him?" I asked, raising my voice. "Are you kidding me? I can't even have any friends because they're all probably working for him."
"I'm sorry.. this is all my fault." My mum sobbed, her hands covering her face.
That is when I realized I had gone too far. I didn't mean to yell at her. None of this was her fault, she couldn't help what had happened.
"It isn't your fault at all, mum. I'm sorry.. I just am upset, this means that I am going to go back to having nobody, because I won't be able to trust anybody." I mumbled out as I rubbed her back slowly. I hated this. I hated the one who called himself my 'father'.
"I know, it's just I feel so bad. We aren't going to ever have a good life with him involved." My mother mumbled out in between breaths.
"Why can't we just go to the cops?" I had a bright idea.. if we went to the cops, this would all be over.
"You know him.. if we go to the cops he will find a way to hurt someone we love.. or even us." My mum cried, and that is when my bright idea crumbled. She was right, we were never going to have a normal life.. he was always going to be there, around every corner.
"Oh. I guess we will just have to be very careful with who we talk to.. and never ever trust anybody." I quietly said as I thought about the little group I had. Any of them.. maybe even all of them could be working for my father.. and I would have no idea.
"I know for a fact that we are safe here. Dorothy is rich.. as you probably figured, she hired a few people to keep watch of the house and all of us in it.. we are safe here, no matter what." My mum said, her breaths were returning back to normal, but her face was now more red and puffy than what it was when I first walked in.
"Now it's all a matter of finding out who we are able to trust." I mumbled, but those words sent shivers up my spine. It made me sick to the stomach knowing that my closest friends could end up being my worst enemies.
