Kel's mom suddenly busted out of the door, holding Sally in her arms. "Kelsey, what in the world took you so long? That grocery run should've taken 20 minutes max!"
"Ah! Sorry...I got sidetracked." Kel murmured looking down at Sunny.
Mrs. Rivera read between the lines, promptly understanding the situation."It's okay, dinner's just going to be later tonight." she informed, holding back the tone of annoyance in her voice. "Sunny, you should join us for dinner, I know you haven't had a home-cooked meal in a while."
"Okay..sure." the corners of Sunny's mouth turned up slightly. "Thank you." Kel's mom had always been kind to him and his sister. He liked that a lot about her and the Rivera family in general. There was always something interesting going on at their house. It was a pretty stark contrast between his house. Upon entry, Kel's dad was watching a game nearly on full blast while Hector barked at the D.V.D player, copious amounts of noisy baby toys were sprawled along the floor, and the boys had to tiptoe just to get to the kitchen.
"Mom has anyone told you that your look really beautiful today." Kel said clasping his hands together.
Mrs. Rivera turned around with an unimpressed expression, simultaneously placing the grocery bag on the counter "What did you do?" she questioned, immediately seeing through her son's obvious game.
"Nothing! I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you and how you'll always love me even if I make a simple mistake that may or may not be detrimental to the outcome of tonight's dinner!" he gushed while slowly creeping toward the door.
She whipped the contents, or lack there of, out of the bag "Just what in the world-KEL!"
Kel grabbed Sunny's hand, "BYE MOM WE'RE GOING TO MY ROOM!" he yelled, dragging Sunny along as he ran up the stairs into his room.
Kel exhaled as his back lay against the door, closing it "Sorry for dragging you over like that."
"It's cool." Sunny said in his usual soft voice, almost letting a playful chuckle escape from his lips. He always enjoyed Kel's hyper shenanigans.
Kel walked over to his closet. "It's been a while since you came over." He said as he tugged his sweater over his big fat head, revealing that dammed cat jersey underneath which at this point is a part of him.
"Yeah...I've always liked coming here though," Sunny mentioned as he sat on the floor littered with clothes, food wrappers and comic books.
"Really?" Kel responded, looking surprised.
Sunny rested his chin in the crack of his knees "Yeah...I have a lot of good memories from being here." he stroked his finger along the carpet.
"Ah," Kel gasped, his face growing warmer. "....Y'know, I feel-"
"KELSEY!" a voice roared from downstairs, cutting him off and making him and Sunny jump in the process.
It was his mom, obviously. Merely running away wasn't enough for her to drop the situation, "Ah shoot. I'll be right back." Kel said with a look of panic in his eyes, contradicting the smile plastered on his face. The tall boy zipped quickly out the door, leaving Sunny alone.
Sunny took the chance to observe and look around the room. Before it was only Kel's side of the room that was a mess but since Hero's been gone, Kel's messiness was able to overtake the rest of the area. Stinky gym socks were sprawled all across the floor along with random piles of clothes positioned in various corners of the room. Sunny's eyes eventually landed on something more appealing, a framed photo on Kel's nightstand. A closer look showed that it was a photo of one of their most memorable picnics as a group. Hero and Mari chatted under a tree while a tired Aubrey rested on Mari's shoulder. Sunny was passed out on Mari's lap and Kel slept right next to him with his hand placed on his back.
