Moving into a new neighborhood in a new state is tough, especially whenever you're a fourteen year old girl that has trouble with making friends.
I thought that summer I had moved, I wasn't gonna make a single friend. But, boy, was I wrong.
_____
I decided to take a walk around the block one hot day to see if there were any kids or girls I could make friends with. I hear the sound of laughter, yelling, and what sounded like a lot of action, so I speed walk closer to the sound and get to a stop when I see a group of boys playing baseball.
I guess I wasn't paying attention, and I heard a voice shout, "Look out!"
Sort of ducking and getting out of the way, I look up to see a baseball getting thrown my way. It startles me and I back up even more, tripping over a rock as I did so.
I hear the boys laugh and my face flushes red, "h-hey! I'll get it!" I shout as I run to get the baseball, I grab it from under a bush and run back to my spot. At this moment, I realised I don't know how to play baseball. Let alone, throw one.
"We're waiting!" A boy in glasses shouted.
I tried my best and threw the baseball, but unfortunately, it landed six feet in front of me.
All of the boys laugh, all but one. He had brown hair that fell in front of his face, a pretty good build, and a good tone of skin. Boy, was he handsome. He looked real good in green. I could've died of embarrassment right there, "my life is over." I mumble to myself, and run off back to my house.
_____
I was sitting on my front steps one day, until I heard a voice speak, "hey."
I look up to see the boy who wasn't laughing, the handsome one. "We're gonna go play some ball and we need an extra player. You wanna come?"
"Aah, no thanks." I press my lips into a fine line.
"Why not, don't you like baseball?"
"Uh, somewhat, but-"
"-but what?"
"I uh, don't really know how."
The boy rolls his eyes and says, "here. I got an extra glove, follow me. We'll teach you, kay?"
My face flushes, "uh, okay!" I stand up and follow the boy.
_____
"So, what's your name again?" I ask trailing behind the boy.
"Matthew, but please, call me Matt."
"Aah, okay."
"And you?" He asks, kind of side-eying me, not in a bad way.
"(Y/n), but you can call me (Y/n/n)."
He smiles and nods his head and we reach behind a store to be met with the group of boys from the beat baseball diamond.
_____
"Why did you bring her?" I hear one of the boys, Chris, ask Matt.
"Because we had eight, now it makes nine." He answered simply.
"Yeah-yeah, so does my sister, but I didn't bring her!" A tan boy named... Well, Yeah-Yeah commented.
"Like I said, it makes nine."
"C'mon, Matt! She ain't game, you saw the way she threw!" Another boy, Kenny, said.
"And, besides, you fill up all the empty positions, since Elz moved to Arizona!" One of the twins, Tommy, cried.
