Chapter 06: How sad, how lovely (everyone panics)

Dream is a tragedy magnet and boy does he have a sense of responsibility over uncontrollable circumstances. Oh, Nim's there too.

Multiple POVs also happen! From one confusing narrator to the next   • w <

At some point, Reaper found himself princess carrying the guardian, you know, to not break his wrists. Because if you really think about it, the higher you are up in the sky, gravity increases and with that mass applied then there would be broken bones? Joints?

Yes, because surely, that's the most problematic thing going on right now!

Nightmare's castle covered a lot of area of the land, its imposing walls that stand high making it a lot harder to look for a decent window to break in. The towers loom over them both with Death flying not too far from the ground.

Geno would be having a fit about not flying too high so that, as he'd declare, fall off high enough that not even Fate's damned plot convenience would save him. Though, he'd make a fuss about Reaper not holding his hands tightly.

It wasn't all that ... great to compare that slice-of-life scene with the current one. A morose comparison, totally unrelated!

"..Why did you save me?" Dream asks, sorry, musters out because he's clearly not well enough to ask a question with miserable implications. "Fate would find an immediate replacement after me."

Reaper tsks. Pulling out the best of his Papyrus' impression, he says, "Don't base all your worth on your job. You're irreplaceable to those who love you."

His brother had once told him so. A part of why he isn't nearly suicidal as he was back then. It took some work, some backtracks, and a load of working it out. Even then, there's still a road to full recovery.

"And if I have no one left? No friends, no family, not anyone in —"

Even before the guardian spirals, Reaper unhesitatingly answers, "Then I'll be that person."

Dream stares at his face, laughing quietly. Tears welled up in his 'eyes', threatening to fall down at any moment now. The guardian rubs his eyes, "You don't even know me."

"It's part of making friends. The "Strangers to Friends" trope!"

A 10k word-count, hurt/comfort, etcetera etcetera; Reaper could imagine Fate running through her machinations. She would pull the right strings to play out her little script, letting the characters run around to appease the creators.

It's a terrifying thought.

But Dream's name still sat there on his list, personally handwritten by Fate herself. The ink had soaked in the paper, the elegant cursive writing being glaringly obvious the longer he keeps trying to ignore it. So surely, that none of this was planned or pre-destined.

He finds it a nice hope.

Dream didn't know when he had fallen asleep. But he knows he's in a dream. Often, since his mother's visit, his quick naps were dreamless. He preferred it that way.

There was nothing but a greyscale background. The dullness of the place made it feel like he was alone. He knows he isn't.

He's planted on his spot, only able to turn his head around. "Reaper?"

"You never once thought about you own mother. What a disappointing child I have made–," Nim appeared, her face as expressionless as the tree bark that he and Nightmare had called 'mother', "–calling for a distant stranger than your mother."
