"IM LEAVING MIKE. THERES NOTHING YOU CAN DO ANYMORE.", Emma said while gathering her belongings and throwing them in an old duffle bag. He drunkenly stared at her with a grin. This wasn't the first time Emma threatened to leave him, but she new this was the last time.
"Where are you gonna go?", Mike said stumbling over to her and trying to hug her from behind. Thankfully the only thing Mike hasn't done to her is lay his hands on her, so she isn't intimidated by him at all. Emma shrugs him off her with tears welling in her eyes. Avoiding eye contact with mike she starts walking over to the bathroom to grab more of her things. Mike sits on the edge of the bed with is head down.
"Are you serious this time Emma?", Mike slurs out- trying to sound as sober as possible. She holds the edge of the sink trying to choke down the tears. Emma stops packing and walks over to mike. she kneels in-between his legs to look into his eyes that are staring at the ground,
"We can't keep going in circles like this Michael. I am not happy and I know you aren't too." , he stares blankly in her eyes. He knew she was right but he couldn't deal with the thought of losing her. They had been together throughout college and have gone through every possible sinario a college couple goes through. They were completely trauma bonded, but Emma needed more.
"I love you so much Mike, but I need to get out of this before we tear each other apart more than we already have. I will always have love for you in my heart but I can't keep putting you before myself.", she grabbed his chin lightly one more time and looked deeply in his eyes. Tears where streaming down both of their cheeks. Emma gave him one more passionate kiss before getting up and packing again. The rest of the time she was there, it was silent. As she was walking towards the door, Mike stood in his bedroom doorway waiting for her to walk out. Emma looked at him one last time,
"I love you, but I need to go".
~6 months later~
Emma jumped out of her 2016 ford bronco because the tire pressure light came on in her car. The tire was super low but not flat just yet. She groaned at the thought of her tire having a leak because she still had about a 2 hour drive to Knoxville, Tennessee. Emma quickly pulled out her phone to find the nearest gas station and to find out where the hell she was.
'Sneedville, Tennessee'
Her car hobbles into the nearest gas station just in time for her rims to start hitting the ground.
"Shit!", she mumbles to herself getting out of the car.
Emma runs over to the air pump to see that it was out of order. She kicks the air pump in frustration and sits on the curb of the gas station. As she was sitting there she was getting a couple stares from what definitely looked like locals. Cut off jean shorts, flannels and worst of all, mullets. As she's getting these looks she starts to walk into the gas station.
"Hey is there any chance you can tell me where the nearest air pump is?", she says walking up to the gas station counter. A older lady pops up from behind the counter with a small smile,
"I'm sorry darlin', closest air pump is 'bout thirty five minutes t'wards Knoxville", she said as she was walking out from behind the counter.
"and with a tire like that you ain't making another 15 minutes", Emma sighed because she knew she was so close, yet so far. The lady put her hand on her back and started guiding her out the door.
"I'm sorry I really do have-", Emma was cut off by the older lady
"My son and grandson got a car place right around back, don't you worry sweetie". Emma smiled at the lady while she still guided her to the back of the gas station. We got up to the front of the shop and two younger boys started jogging over.
"Now you wait here i'll go grab my son, these are some of his workers Billy and Joel", Emma snickered at their names. The boys looked to be around 13 and 12 years old. They looked her up and down before sticking both their hands out.
"You ain't definitely from 'round here", the older looking one said.
"Is it that obvious?", Emma said while going to shake both of their hands. The boys giggled and started to walk around her in circles asking all sorts of questions.
'Where are you from? Are ya lost? What kinda jeans are those?'
before Emma could even answer any of the questions, a deep southern accent came from behind them.
"Now will you two stop s'rounding this poor girl like a couple of vultures". Emma laughed at the comment before locking eyes with the man. He had deep blue eyes and a grown-out mullet. the boys stopped running around and stood still,
"Sorry boss", the youngest boy said.
"Don't you mean boss jr.?", the older boy said while smirking. Before the man could say anything the boys started to run away giggling.
"Sorry 'bout them two, they just don't see new people too often", he said while looking at the ground. Emma has never in her life thought some 'redneck' would be this handsome, but she did.
"Oh they're fine", she barely croaked out. Emma has never lost her words with a guy before but this one took her breath away. He noticed her nervousness and began to chuckle,
"Well let's go take a look at that tire", he said while walking back towards the gas station.
~~~
Emma waited in the car shop for about 45 minutes. The older lady who worked at the gas station's name is Janice and she has owned that gas station for the past 36 years. She kept giving Emma free soda's and snacks but, Emma insisted on paying but Janice was too nice.
"So darlin' where are you from?", Janice said giving her another can of coke.
"Oh I'm from upstate New York", she said taking a sip of her opened can of coke. Janice's face lit up.
"You are a long way from home", Janice said. Emma looked down and laughed.
"Well Im heading up to Knoxville actually, Ive been looking to get out of the cold for a while now", Janice giggled and started to pick up all of the wrappers Emma had from the snacks. Emma quickly started to help her.
"So the tire has got a leak, but I put in an order and it should be here in the mornin'", Janice's cute grandson said while wiping the sweat on his for-head with a rag. Emma couldn't help but stare at his arms in his grey cut off T-shirt. Emma then snapped out of it and realized she had to stay the night in this podunk town.
"I'm sorry but I've gotta get going up to Knoxville, and I don't have a place to stay or even a ride to get there", Emma said scrambling for her keys and her purse. Janice's grandson grabbed the keys quickly out of her hand,
"hey!-"
"There ain't no way one, you're driving on that thing and two, gettin' it off the lift", he said with an annoyed tone. Emma scuffed and snagged the keys right back from him.
"Excuse me SIR but I don't even know your name, and you think it's okay to take MY keys from me? You've got some nerve-",
"It's Morgan", he said while taking her keys from her again.
