"Which shoe matches better?" Ruby holds up the shoes in question, giving me a pointed look. A pair of shiny white heels in her left hand, a pair of shiny red heels in her right hand.
Ruby and Alex had been asked to attend a red carpet event for a new romantic comedy movie premier, as a way to gain publicity for their own upcoming movie.
We're in an overly fancy hotel room down the block from where the event is set to take place, using it as a main hub for getting ready. The place is huge, with a kitchenette and two separate bedrooms and bathrooms. Jenna brought in a professional stylist who had already done Ruby's makeup and hair, and had pulled out a clothes rack with 15 different outfits to choose from.
The girls spent over an hour trying them on in the next room, comparing and critiquing, before settling on a form fitting red dress with an open back. It looked beautiful on her, and I made sure to tell her so the second she walked into the room.
"I'm not sure if I should be the one to ask for fashion related advice." I say as I look between the shoe options.
"You're right. You do wear a lot of sweater vests. Not that you don't look amazing all the time though." She compliments. "I think I'm going to go with the white. Because then I can tie the whole look together with a pearl necklace."
"See? You didn't need me at all." I say ask she pulls the shoes on and reaches to grab the necklace from the jewelry box on the desk.
"I still value your opinion though. It looks good right?" She turns around in a slow circle in front of me. I can't help but admire her exposed skin as she spins. She smoothes her hands down the front of her dress and walks to the full length mirror across the room. "Can you help me clip on the necklace?"
I stand up from my seat in the corner and smooth out my pants. Earlier I was handed my own outfit to put on, a simple black suit with a crisp white undershirt. Something to blend into the background as the security while still looking like I belong.
She hands me the necklace when I stop behind her at the mirror. I reach my arms around the front of her neck as she holds her hair out of the way. I can't stop my hands from giving a nervous shake as I miss the clasp on the first try, but when I get it on and let it fall into place on her neck, my hands involuntarily lay to rest on her shoulders.
I feel her chest rise in a deep breath and meet her eyes in our reflection of the mirror. She turns her head up to look towards me, so I look down to meet her gaze.
"You look beautiful." I tell her again, softly.
"Thank you." She breathes out.
We're broken apart by a knock on the door, Ruby quickly moves away and heads towards the seat in the corner where I was previously sitting. Jenna walks in a few seconds later holding a covered tray of food. Why does she always seem to interrupt a moment between us with lunch?
"I've got little sandwich triangles. Figured you might be a little peckish after trying everything on." She says and sets the tray next to the jewellery box.
"Impeccable timing, Jenna." Ruby says with a laugh as she makes eye contact with me from across the room. Clearly she's thinking the same thing about her friend always interrupting with food. "I could use a snack."
About half an hour later there's another knock on the hotel door. Jenna get's up to answer it and lets in Alex. He's wearing a simple suit like myself, but his is dark grey with a lighter grey undershirt.
"Wow, Ruby. You look great!" He says when he catches sight of her standing in the next room.
"Thanks. So do you. Should we be heading out?"
