"And the winner is..." Lewis paused to add suspense, the whole town was on their toes.

"Leslie, with a total of 120 points! Congratulations!"

Everyone broke into a thunderous applause and I turned to Alex, his big smile matching my own.

"You did it again, Les. I'm so proud of you!" He laughed, picking me up into a crushing hug and spinning us around.

I giggled as he gently set me back down on my feet, "I couldn't have done it without your help babe"

It was true, Alex was a tremendous help. We took turns alternating between taking care of the animals, harvesting crops, and making the artisan items.

With both of our efforts, Grace Farm was single-handedly boosting Pelican Town's economy. I just knew grandpa would be proud of me.

"Here's your gold, you did a great job with your display this year. I'm impressed!" Lewis said with a proud smile.

"Thanks Lewis!" I beamed as I graciously accepted the money.

He nodded, "Don't forget to clean out your grange display"

"Got it."

As promised, Alex and I cleared out our display in record time, passing by a grumbling Pierre as we left.

"She's cheating, I just know it!" He said under his breath.

Alex gave me a look and I shrugged. Haters gonna hate.

We continued to walk towards the colourful fair attractions.

Pierre was always salty, but fuck Pierre. I hated him with a passion, and if it weren't for my dependence on him for seeds, I would gladly live on without seeing his face. I just needed to find time to build a seed maker and I would never have to buy or sell anything to Pierre ever again.

Alex chuckled as he read the look on my face, "Enough Pierre slander, let's enjoy our time here" he said, nodding to the 'strength' game.

Alex always put all of his muscle into it, and I never quite had the heart to tell him that it had nothing to do with how hard he could hit it.

Nevertheless, it was fun watching him show off, and it was even more fun watching his face as I won a star token on my first try.

Alex scrunched his nose, "Ew. Why do have to be so good at everything, Les"

I rose up on my toes, pecking his cheek, "I'll never be as good as you when it comes to gridball. Or giving massages"

He smiled his adorable dimpled smile and pulled me close, tucking me into to his side, "Fair enough"

I love how small he made me feel, his large, toned body protecting me from all the dangers of the world. I felt so safe then, nestled beside him as notes of bright music and laughter danced on the warm summer breeze.

We strolled through the fair, enjoying the sight of the children running around and the usually busy townspeople taking a break and enjoying their time.

Jas and Vincent ran by us, giggling adorably as they each held sticks of cotton candy as big as their heads.

Jodi was going to have a heart attack.

"Hey, look at that" Alex nodded towards a more secluded tent near the graveyard.

"Huh, can we go check it out?"

He shrugged, "Yeah, why not."

We walked over to the tent hand in hand, and inside was a woman who I recognized as the fortune teller from Welwick's Oracle.

"Oh! It's you!" I said enthusiastically, pulling Alex forward with newfound excitement.

The fortune teller looked up, an aura of mystery shrouding her tent, "Ah, welcome Mr. and Mrs. Mullner. Would you like to have your fortunes read for 100 gold?"

Alex and I looked at each other and he nodded once, "This will be interesting."

I gingerly took the money out of my pocket, placing the coins on the table.

The fortune teller's eyes became clouded as she stared into a crystal ball, seemingly looking at something that neither Alex nor I could see.

"Yes... the spirits are whispering to me now. A thriving farm, a dark cellar filled to the brim with casks of aged wine. Oh, the sun is setting and there is one, no, two children running about a house. The lights are off, you two seem to be having a good time..."

The fortune teller paused, then frowned, "Danger, I sense danger in the near future, Leslie. Yes, you must be careful. I cannot say any more"

Alex's arm tightened around mine as the fortune teller suddenly stood up, and disappeared into her tent.

We stood there, too shocked to move.

"Danger?" I whispered, finally leaving my stupor.

"She's probably lying. You know how fortune tellers are, always spouting nonsense" Alex said nervously.

"Y-yeah. Of course. "

"What do you say we grab something to eat?" he said softly, pulling me back towards town square.

I couldn't shake the tingly feeling in my spine as we looked for a place to sit. Alex seemed tense too, even though he said he didn't believe the fortune teller. His arm never left my waist the entire time we walked.

We found a spot in a a roped off area filled with picnic tables. Lucky for us, Alex immediately spotted Evelyn and George. I loved those two like they were my own grandparents.

"Hey Evie, hey George. How are you two enjoying the fair so far?" I asked them with a smile, plopping down on the bench as Alex kissed their cheeks.

"Meh. Too much ruckus," George grumbled.

Alex chuckled at his moodiness, "C'mon gramps, don't tell me you didn't enjoy Marnie's petting zoo. I saw that smile of yours"

"Oh don't worry about us, we had a lovely time dear", Evelyn said sweetly, "And congratulations on the grange display you two! I'm certain your grandfather would be proud, Leslie."

"Thanks Evie. That means a lot" I said with a somber smile.

The table was silent for a few seconds before Alex nudged my side, "Why don't you go have some more fun while I order us some food? I'll call you over when it's ready"

I stood up, kissing the top of his head since he was seated, "Thanks goob. Can you get me some chicken nuggets?"

He smiled, "Sure thing babe"

I gave Evelyn and George a quick wave before I walked back to town square. I was glad for the opportunity to walk around and move my legs. I hated sitting for long periods of time.

Truthfully, I wasn't too keen about talking about my grandpa. I missed him like crazy, every day on the farm was a reminder of him and all the memories I made during summers here in the valley as a child.

I stopped walking, smiling to myself as I found the familiar emo and golden retriever duo. Sebby and Sam stood by some bushes, casually conversing. Bothering those two was my specialty.

Just as I was about to head over to them, I felt an arm snake around my waist, pulling me flush against a hard body, "That was fast. I didn't even get to play a carnival game." I laughed, looking up and expecting to see Alex's familiar face.

But the face looking down at me did not belong to my husband. I didn't recognize this person at all.
