Chapter 24: Lust, Not Love
I don't think that I could've ran faster in my life.
When I arrived at Kate's apartment door, I knocked.
"Kate, it's me."
There was shuffling from inside and a bump from a table. "Shit." I heard her say and I chuckled silently.
Then Kate opened the door and I saw her beautiful face twisted into confusion and worry. "Ky? You're not supposed to be here. Bill sent out guards-"
"I have to talk to you. It's urgent." I said quickly. My fingers were twitching at my sides and I was hoping to God that this would go smoothly.
Hesitating, she slowly opened the door wider so I could slip in. When she closed it behind me, I turned and ran my fingers through my tousled, messy hair frustratingly.
"Hey," Kate said softly, running her hands over my shoulders and massaging them, "what's wrong?"
Pleasant feelings coursed through me at her words. You can do this. You can do this. I chanted over and over.
Coming to stand in front of me, she rested her head against my chest and sighed. "It was Calloway who snitched, wasn't it?"
I wrapped warm arms around her. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was. He's the only one who ever saw us together."
Squeezing her eyes shut, Kate embraced me harder. "This is all so stupid. We were so careless..." she trailed on. "I guess this is over, huh?"
I pulled her back so I could look down at her. Damn, she's so fucking beautiful.
"Actually, it's not..." I said.
Her eyes instantly widened. "What?"
Taking a deep breath, I began. "I spoke with Bill some more, and I told him that...that I love you...and he said, quote, 'if you truly love Kate, then I'll let you two be.' So..." I said awkwardly, "Yeah..."
She looked at me with shock. A thousand things were running through my head at what she would do, what she would say, and if she loved me back as much as I loved her. Then she finally spoke. "Oh my God."
I paused, waiting while my heart was beating at an unhealthy speed. I could feel some of my anxiety within me, and I held her a little tighter. Wondering what was going on in that beautiful head of hers, I sucked in a breath. What would she say? Will she accept my love? Or deny it?
Oh Kate, please say that you love me.
"That's genius!" she yelled, standing on her tiptoes and hugging me with all her strength.
I frowned. "Uh..."
She leaned back to look up at me and smiled. "You're so smart, Ky. Tricking Bill into thinking you love me? Brilliant!" she exclaimed.
My whole body tensed and my face fell. Kate thinks this is all a hoax. She doesn't believe me. I didn't know what to feel. All I felt was...pain.
"Kate..." I said quietly.
She didn't listen. "I mean, why didn't I think of that? It's perfect!"
"Kate."
She threw her hands into the air. "Love...the perfect escape plan. Good job, Ky."
"Kate." I said through gritted teeth.
"Wow, just wow. What was Bill's face like? He probably thinks we're gonna get married or something! That's hilarious-"
