Chapter 3: Dogs and Douches
The next week was filled with hockey practice, annoying teammates, and dog runs.
Besides Stanley, I didn't have many friends to start out with in New York. It was such a big city, yet the only people I knew were arrogant jerks from a hockey team.
I decided that going out for a run again would clear my head. I leashed Stanley and headed out the door.
The evening sky was beautiful. Not dark, but not early bright. It was a mixture that felt calm.
The park was unusually empty, but it was probably because the time.
Stanley suddenly jerked on the leash and ran faster. "Stanley!"
I could barely keep up while trying to desperately stop him and pull him back.
"Stanley! Stop!" I yelled, but he wouldn't cooperate.
And before I knew it, the leash was pulled out of my grasp and Stanley went running to the other side of the park.
I groaned and jogged the same way he went.
When I turned a corner, I saw Stanley chasing another golden retriever around in circles. I could barely make out which one was mine. Going over to the wild dogs, I pulled Stanley out from the circle.
"Georgia!" A familiar voice rang out. A man in a faded blue hoodie and sweatpants came running out from the trees.
"Ky?" I said, standing up.
He stopped in his tracks and looked down at me confusedly. "Kate?"
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"It's a public park."
I internally smacked myself for asking such a dumb question. He came closer and then I really noticed how much he towered over me.
"This your dog?" He asked, bending down to scratch Stanley behind the ears.
"Yeah," I looked over at the other golden retriever who was now trotting towards Ky.
"Hey, Georgia." Ky said, petting what I assumed was his dog. "I didn't peg you as a dog person..." he said, looking at me.
"I didn't peg you as a jerk. Guess we all have our secrets, don't we?" I shot back, not feeling one ounce of guilt. He was rude, damn it.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes. "Look, I'm sorry that I thought you would be a distraction. I was just frustrated that day. There's no excuse for what I said, and I'm truly sorry. I hope you can forgive me?"
Looking at him, I decided that since everyone has their shitty moments, I should forgive him.
"Apology accepted."
He sighed with relief and smiled. "What's your dog's name?"
I looked down at the still hyper active dog next to me who was panting heavily. "Stanley."
He chuckled. "You named your dog after the Stanley Cup? Superstitious much?"
"You named yours after a state?" I said back.
"I actually named her after my dead sister." Ky answered, quietly.
I felt like the biggest asshole. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't know..."
He shrugged. "It's alright."
We stood in silence and watched the dogs run around in circles. When I checked the time, I turned to Ky.
"Well, I should get going." I called Stanley over and attached his leash to his green collar.
"Yeah, me too. I'll see you at practice Monday." He said and I nodded goodbye.
Jogging back home, my mind wandered to Ky and his dog. What had happened to his sister? Old age? A disease? I don't know, but it was killing me to find out.
You shouldn't be trying to snoop in other people's business. I thought.
My apartment building came into sight and I slowed to a walk.
For some reason, I was wanting Monday to hurry up. Maybe I just had my adrenaline pumping.
Or maybe you want to see Ky.
Shut the fuck up brain.
Trust me, Ky is the last person I want to see.
