Chapter 2
More Wondrous Than Any Wonders
Jiang Cheng took Nie Jingyi into his hands and felt his forehead.
It was a little warm.
He then felt the foreheads of the other boys who had inhaled the powder from the corpse.
They were the same.
He lifted Nie Jingyi's eyelids, "Show me your tongue."
Nie Jingyi complied with reluctance, "Ah."
"..."
After a brief examination, Jiang Cheng relayed his findings, "You're under corpse poisoning."
Corpse poisoning was caused primarily by being wounded by a turned corpse or having a wound come into contact with their necrotic blood. Cultivators didn't usually let walking corpses get so close that they get injured, so no one carried elixirs that cured corpse poisoning.
"Mo-gongzi," Lan Sizhui is concerned, brows knitted, "will anything happen to them?"
"Nothing at the moment." Jiang Cheng responded, his countenance solemn, "But when it enters the bloodstream, circulates throughout the body, and enters the heart -- nothing can help."
Lan Sizhui said with a stutter, trepidation infusing him. "Wh-What will happen?"
"Whatever happens to corpses will happen to you." Jiang Cheng expounds. "If you're lucky, you'll just rot away. If you don't, you might turn into a long-haired corpse who can only hop around for the rest of your life."
The poisoned disciples all gasped.
Putting his hands on his hips, Jiang Cheng spoke, "Do you want to cure it?"
Everyone nodded.
"If you want to cure it, then listen up." Jiang Cheng uttered, his words had a tone of confidence that dispelled all worries. "From now on, you must all behave and listen to everything I say." He eyed them, one by one, "Every single one of you."
"What is this?!" Nie Jingyi spit out one mouthful of Jiang Cheng's prepared congee, "Poison?!"
"Ni ge xiaogui!" Jiang Cheng appeared 'very' offended, "What do you mean 'poison'?! It's the cure! Glutinous rice congee."
It is a folk medicine.
Normally, the glutinous rice is applied to the scratched or bitten wound. Although it will cause significant pain, it will undoubtedly be effective. However, since the disciples ingested corpse poisoning powder rather than being scratched or bitten, Jiang Cheng can only make rice congee for them to eat.
Nie Jingyi continued to air his grievances, "First of all, I don't know why glutinous rice would be the cure! But... ptui!"
'The taste...' Nie Jingyi pondered within himself, perplexed, 'is so terrifying that it almost gives me a sense of deja vu.'
The other boys who had tasted their portions bobbed their heads in unison, their eyes welling up with tears. "We've never had such a spicy congee before!"
Jiang Cheng grew up in Yunmeng. People from Yunmeng were all quite spice-tolerant, but his penchant for spice wasn't 'beyond' the extreme.
So, what's the deal with these expressions?!
It was just too offensive!
Wei Ying's cooking is substantially worse.
Her taste for spice was borderline 'obsessive'.
Anytime Wei Ying set about the kitchen, the food would be so spicy that even Jiang Cheng could only smash his bowl and curse.
He'll ask again -- what's the deal with these expressions?!
