Chapter 3

Beneath Her Joyful Exterior

Wei Ying, pen name Wei Wuxian.

She ranked as the 'most beautiful maiden' in the Cultivation World.

Wei Wuxian was a lighthearted cultivator and prankster with a heroic and humble heart. She enjoys misbehaving and hates rules. As a result, she frequently got into trouble during her three-month training period at the Gusu Lan Clan's Cloud Recesses. She likes teasing others, especially Lan Wangji because of his cold, aloof demeanor, but she means well and knows when to be serious.

She was boisterous, fun-loving, and prone to losing her focus easily. She was overly talkative, to the point of annoying others, and has a tendency to say inappropriate things without thinking first.

She was also quite audacious, once openly stating in class in front of Lan Qiren a theory she devised to control corrupted spirits by tapping into their resentful energy rather than having to work hard to form her golden core to become a cultivator. This was an especially dangerous topic to discuss openly because such actions would result in expulsion from the Cultivation World.

Nonetheless, despite her easygoing personality, she was clearly 'very intelligent', having risen to the second rank of Lan Qiren's students. She was also good at gathering information, often by chatting with locals. This shows her interpersonal skills, as she used to have hundreds of friends and was able to befriend the cold Lan Wangji despite a rough start.

She has a lot of charisma. Everyone around her was willing to follow her lead and listen to her. She has shown that she can be caring and protective of her friends and family, too. In addition, she also despises evil and corruption, as evidenced by her dislike of the Wen Clan.

Wei Wuxian was very flirtatious. She read many pornography books and flirted with many men (prior to meeting Lan Wangji) in her younger years. She regards herself as polite to all men (and to women). She was very daring and did outrageous things that most people would be deeply embarrassed by.

However, beneath her joyful exterior was a dark past and a harsh upbringing.

Her parents died when she was young, and she was forced to live on the streets and fight with rabid dogs for food to survive. Jiang Fengmian (her shushu), who brought her to Lotus Pier, was 'in love' with her mother, which caused friction between Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan, his wife, as he 'favored' Wei Wuxian over his own children, Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng, inducing Yu Ziyuan to ignore Wei Wuxian and, on occasion, 'abuse' and 'whip' her. Her cheerful smile could be an attempt to conceal the pain and suffering she has endured.

Jin Ruyin's grip on the bronze mirror shook.

'Cheerful.'

Jin Ruyin forced her lips to curve upward, her eyes shaping into crescents.

She opened her mouth, "I am Wei Wuxian."

'Mischievous and a tease.'

Jin Ruyin called, "Ge."

No response.

She reiterated, "Ge."

There was still no reply.

She called his birth name, "Jin Ling."

No reaction still.

She enunciated his nickname, "A-Ling."

Ge (finally) spared her a glance, expression distinctly irritated. His brows were lowered and pulled closer together, his eyelids squinted, "Shenme?!"

Jin Ruyin and Ge were forced to clean a room as punishment for their misbehavior. They had a fight earlier over something trivial (it's not worth mentioning). Even worse, their parents saw them in that way of interaction.
