» chapter four: persistence is key «

"So, are you going to tell me what happened down at the Boneyard tonight?"

Winnie looked up from the book that she was reading in the candlelight to see her mum standing at her door. The young girl had gotten home from the disastrous kegger a few hours ago.

Her small high had since worn off and Raquel and Quinn had retreated to their own homes. Winnie had been waiting for this conversation since the fight even happened.

Lowering the book, Winnie shrugged, "I don't know what you're talking about.

The Sheriff removed her hat, turning on the bedroom light. "C'mon, Winnie, I'm just trying to do my job."

"Okay," Winnie said, sitting up straighter. "Then what I will tell you, is that whoever you or anybody else tried to blame for what may or may not have happened tonight is not the only guilty party and I will testify otherwise if they are the only ones blamed."

With a sigh, the Sheriff walked over and sat beside her daughter. "You know that I understand, right? This is not Kooks versus Pogues; I'm here to fight for what's fair."

"So, you've never once given in to pressure?" the girl challenged. "They haven't threatened your job or offered you money to force your hand and you've accepted?"
