Riker's POV:

I'm currently waiting for Lanie to come downstairs. After waiting several more mintues, she finally came down the stairs. We got in the car, and I drove to her to school. She got out of the car after she had told me goodbye. I drove over to the parking lot and parked. I changed clothes, put a hoodie on, tried to disguise myself as best as possible, and got out of the car. Yep, I'm going back to school for a few days to see what all goes down here. I enrolled myself and everything. It was kinda ridiculous how they let me enroll in 9th grade without question, but it worked well with my plan. I went to my locker and got my books out. I noticed from a distance that Lanie looked deppressed, but before I could go over to her, she walked off to class. I had looked at her schedule last night and found that we have a lot of the same classes. I walked off to home room, which happened to be one of the classes we shared. I "conveniently" sat down in the desk next to her. "Hi, I'm Nathaniel," I said. Yeah, Nathaniel sounds cool enough.

"I'm Lanie," she said,"You look almost like one of my best friends."

"Really? What's he like?" I asked, mostly just wanting to know how she describes me.

"He's really sweet and probably the best thing that has every happened to me. He's really helped me through a lot," she said. I was smiling so much my face hurt. That was sweetest thing anyone has every said to me.

"He sounds-." The teacher started talking before I could finish.

*Time skip to lunch because no one really cares about boring school work*

I saw Lanie sitting by herself. I walked over to her and sat down. I smiled at her, and she smiled back. We talked and ate lunch until a girl approached us and sat down beside me.

"You should sit with us next time instead of sitting with this loser," the girl said to me while giving Lanie a glare. I tried my best not to show how angry I really was.

"Umm, no thanks!" I said as I got up and walked off like nothing happened. The next class was drama. Finally, a class I liked! Once again, Lanie was in this class, so I went to sit beside her. I found her talking to that girl, who I found out name's Emma. Lanie looked upset. I went to sit down in my desk until I heard Emma say,"Nobody likes you." That's it! I walked over to Emma and said," Umm... excuse me. I don't know if you can hear over your obnoxious, loud mouth, but listen here. You don't have any right to bully someone, especially someone who has never done a thing to you. Oh, and you're wrong. Not only me but my entire family LOVES Lanie!" I told her.

I knew I had blown my cover, but I wasn't finished yet. I turned to the rest of the class, who was now watching, and said,"None of you have probably even tried to become friends with her because Emma didn't." I grabbed Lanie's hand and my stuff and walked out of the class room.

Lanie's POV:

I didn't know where Riker was taking me, but I followed him anyway.  He led me to his car, but he stopped right before pulling me into a hug.

"Lanie, please don't be mad at me. I just wanted to protect my best friend," he said.

"Riker, I'm not mad at you. I'm actually really glad you were here today," I said.

"Did you really mean what you said about me being the best thing that has ever happened to you?" he asked, changing the subject.

"Of course! You are always here to talk to me about anything and vice versa. I don't even have that kind of relationship with my parents because they are almost never here. Literally, I haven't seen them in three months!" I said.

Riker didn't really react. He got in the car, and I followed. We got home and went into the living room where everyone was.

"What are you doing here so early, Lanie?" Rocky asked.

"I brought her home from school because of something," Riker said, looking at me figuring I probably didn't want to tell them. I knew I had to tell them eventually, so what better time than now?

"What happened?!?" They all said at the same time. I explained the long, dreary story to them, and they all looked shocked. They all babbled stuff like 'I'm sorry' until Riker spoke up.

"I want to homeschool you. You shouldn't have to put up with this."

"You don't have time to homeschool me!" I said in a duh tone.

"Plus, that's not really your decision. It's her parents," Rydel said to Riker.

"Guys, I think that's not our main problem right now!" Ross said pointing to the tv. We all looked at the tv. It had a picture of an accident.

"There has been a fatal accident involving a semi truck. The paramedics have just pronounced dead two people identified as Amelia and John Shadows. More information is to come as we receive more updates."

I sat there in shock. My parents are gone. They really aren't here very often. Generally, they come home for about two days before they take off to another place for three to four months. They are still my parents though. Everyone sat in silence until I got up and went to my room. I really didn't want sympathy. I sat on my bed and cried. I was facing the wall, but I could feel a dip in the bed. The person put their hand on my shoulder. I sat up and put my face in my hands.

Riker's POV:

I hugged her. I didn't really know what else to do. She just cried into my shirt.

"Why me?" she whispered.

"Aww, Lanie everything happens for a reason. Sometimes we don't understand the reason, but there is one," I said. My heart was breaking seeing her like this. I actually started tearing up it hurt so badly.

"Riker, please don't start. The last thing I need is for you to be crying too!" she said.

"I can't help it. I don't like seeing you upset. I wanna see you smile!" I said singing the last part. She smiled."Yay! You smiled!" I sang several more songs until I saw that she was asleep. I carefully got up and went back downstairs to the others to see about what we should do.
