A few weeks later

We were woken by the sound of sirens. "There's been a security breach" Mina gasped as we shot out of bed. "I don't understand how this could happen. The whole world has been destroyed" I questioned as Mina frantically raced around the room to make herself look presentable. "I'm not sure... it could be anything" she said, clearly scared.

"I'm going to go and find Ms. Mead then see what's going on. Please stay here" she said, cupping my face in her hands. "Mina... please be careful" I pleaded. She nodded, placed a kiss on my forehead, and left. All I could do was wait.

Mina's POV

I didn't want to leave Y/N like that but I had no other choice. I have to protect her.

"Ms. Mead, do we know what's out there?" I asked when I saw her standing by the entrance. "Not yet Ms. Venable. We are about to open the doors" she nodded and the doors opened. I braced myself as anything could be about to walk through the doors and potentially kill me. Ms. Mead stood still, gun in hand waiting to shoot whatever it was that tried to break in.

However, the unexpected happened. A young man with long blonde hair stood before us. "Who are you?" I asked, nervously. "I am Michael Langdon... I'm from the cooperative" he smirked. My heart skipped a beat, maybe we were going to be safe after all?

Y/N POV

We were all called to the common room. A strange man stood before us and Mina had a smile on her face? I was so confused... how was this man not dead?

"I'm Michael Langdon... I'm from the cooperative" he announced, and everyone began whispering excitedly. "All the other outposts have been overrun, it is likely that this one will not make it through the year"

"Why are you here?" Dinah asked in confusion. "Because it's only a matter of time before the same thing happens to you" Michael smirked. "The good news is, there's another facility... a sanctuary. This one's completely impregnable and stocked with enough supplies to last a decade" he smiled at us all.

"So you're here to take us there?" Gallant asked. Michael scoffed, "I've been assigned to evaluate the people here and accept the ones most worthy of survival... I could take all of you, or none of you" I looked at Mina when he said this, she looked petrified. "Those who make it live, those who don't... end up like my horses" he smiled again.

I felt physically sick. There's a very high chance I might not get chosen. But I'm okay with that as long as Mina gets to go. "I will be holding meetings where I get to know you... to see if you're worthy enough to be taken to the sanctuary" he looked me dead in the eye. At that moment, I thought he was going to kill me.

"I'm looking forward to meeting each and every one of you" he smiled one last time before dismissing us.

Mina was the first to leave, I waited a couple of minutes before following her. She went to her room.

I knocked on the door lightly before entering. "Mina?" I asked. She was crying, "hey? What's wrong?" I asked her gently. "Langdon isn't going to pick me to go is he?" she asked. "How do you know that?" I said, trying to make her see the light in the situation.

"Because Y/N, I'm not perfect like he wants! I'm a monster" she yelled. "Mina, we've been through this, you are not a monster"

"To you, I'm not... but to him, I'm an undesirable" she whimpered.
