Chapter Seven - Scare Game Sign-Up

A few days after winter break, Mike and Sulley now attend a scream can designer class with a yellow furry monster, who speaks in a monotone voice, "Welcome back. I hope everyone had a pleasant break. Some say that a career as a scream can designer is boring. Unchallenging. A waste of a monster's potential. *deeply sighs* Open your text books to chapter three. We will now plunge into the rich history of scream can design." Mike opens his book and looks at his classmates, only to see Sulley a few chairs away.

Sulley was shooting a glare at him as he crushes his scream canister. Mike narrowed his eye. After class, Mike walks out, but Sulley follows him, keeping his glare at him. From a distant, he sees the students from the scaring program walk out and saw Diane walking out with another monster. Mike turned his eye away and keeps walking. From afar, Diane spots Mike being glared down by Sulley, but her eyes glanced far to the misfits and Teresa. The group were hanging out and laughing, much to Diane's guilt. She should've stood up for Teresa, but she didn't. Once he reached his room, a frustrated Mike threw his book at a poster, which falls down to reveal the Scare Games flier he grabbed on the first day.

Mike glanced at the flier for a second until a wave of confidence struck him as he grabs the flier and heads out the room, where Sulley stands. Mike pushed him out of the way and happily rushed out. Sulley watched with confusion. At the fraternity housings, there was an assemble there as Claire, one of the head judges for the Scare Games, spoke through the mic, "Welcome to this year's Greek Scare Games kick-off!" The crowd cheers as her friend, Brock, shouted, "The Scare Games! Yeeeah!" Claire shuts him up and said, "We have a special guest, the founder of the Games, Dean Hardscrabble." The Dean walks up to the microphone as she spoke, "Good afternoon."

"As a student, I created these games as a friendly competition. But be prepared...to take home the trophy, you must be the most fearsome monsters on campus. Good luck and may the best monsters win." Brock takes over and said, "Alright everybody! We're closing down sign-ups, so we'll see you all-" "WAIT!!" A voice yelled from the back. Everybody, including Diane, Teresa, Wolf, Shark, Snake, Tarantula, and Piranha, turned to see Mike on top of a car with his hand up as he said, "I'm signing up!" Most of the monsters and animals laugh at him as Claire spoke, "Uh...you have to be in a fraternity to compete."

"Behold, the next winning fraternity of the Scare Games, the brothers, my brothers...of Oozma Kappa!" Mike announced as he points to the strange looking members of his new fraternity. "Hi." Squishy greeted awkwardly as a balloon popped and fell on his face. Dean Hardscrabble goes over to Mike and asked, "Mr. Wazowski, what are you doing?" "You just said the winners are the most fearsome monsters on campus. If I win, it means you kicked out the best scarer in the whole school." Hardscrabble looked unamused as she said, "That won't happen."

She turns her back to him, but pauses at his next words, "How about a little wager? If I win, you let me back in the Scaring Program." The Dean slowly turns around and asked, "And what would that prove?" Mike looked at her and answered, "That you were wrong." Everyone gasped at that, including Teresa and the Misfits, before Snake said, "Wow. That guy has guts." Hardscrabble looked convinced before she said, "Very well. If you win, I will let your entire team into the Scare Program."

She walks closer to Mike and adds, "But, if you lose... you will leave Monsters University." Mike looks down, thinking about it, then looks back at the Dean and said, "Deal." Hardscrabble turns around and said, "Now... all you need to do is find enough members to compete." Mike looked confused and asked, "We need six guys, right?" Brock takes over and said, "Six monsters and six mentors! Sorry chief! We count bodies, not heads." He points to Terri and Terry and said, "That dude counts as one!"

The crowd laughs as Terri and Terry looked at each other while Mike looks at the crowd and asked, "A-anyone else want to join our team? Anyone at all?" He sees Randell in the crowd as the purple lizard tries to squeeze through the large crowd before he pauses at hearing a familiar voice, "Randy! Randy, thank goodness! I need you on my team!" Randy looks at Mike and said, "Oh... sorry, I'm already on a team." He reveals his ROR sweater just as Johnny calls him over. Randy whispered to Mike, "I'm finally in with the cool kids, Mike. Don't blow this for me."

He regroups with the RORs while Mike still asked if anyone else can join OK until Claire said, "Yeah, sorry. Doesn't look good. We have to move on. Your team doesn't qualify." The car Mike is standing on starts to shake as Sulley, Teresa, and the Misfits, joins him as Sulley said, "Yes, it does. The star player has just arrived." "And we came because Tess told us your life story." Wolf said as Mike quickly turns around and said, "You guys, I can handle, but him; no way!"

He refers to Sulley as he turns to the monsters and said, "Someone else, please! Anyone else!" "We're shutting down sign-up, okay. Is he on your team or not?" Claire asked, wanting this to end so that they can move on. Sulley gives Mike a cocky smile as Teresa said to Mike, "Look, it'll only be one event, and you and the big blue bear can be enemies again." Mike stares at Sulley before finally relenting, "Fine! Yes, he's on my team." Dean walks away and said, "Good luck." Mike turns to Sulley as he asked, "Alright, Wazowski, what's the plan?"
