Ken stood across from his old friend Ryu, both prepared to face each other in the arena.
Ryu shook his head, looking at Ken with a slight smile. "I can't believe we're up against each other this early in the tournament."
Ken's grin was wide and eager. "Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Caught you fresh, my friend. This time, no excuses."
Ryu met his gaze calmly. "I don't make excuses, Ken-win or lose."
"Good," Ken replied. "Because you'd have none anyway."
Before they could begin, Rugal's voice echoed over the loudspeaker. "Wait! Let's make things a little more... interesting."
Beside him, Bison raised an eyebrow. "What do you have in mind?"
Rugal's eyes gleamed. "Let's shake it up. Double-team rounds. Fighters will pair up with their original opponents."
Bison chuckled, clearly entertained by the idea. "Fine by me. Besides, I have no intention of spending all year here."
A murmur spread through the arena as the fighters took in this unexpected twist. Ken and Ryu shared a look-a mixture of relief and anticipation. Both were spared the challenge of facing each other... and yet, they'd now have to depend on one another to make it through the tournament.
Ken's laughter broke the silence between them, nervous but spirited. He couldn't deny the thrill of teaming up with Ryu, yet he felt a flicker of self-doubt. He didn't want to disappoint Ryu, nor be disappointed himself. Sensing his friend's hesitation, Ryu gave Ken a reassuring look.
"Trust yourself, Ken," Ryu said calmly. "And trust me. We've got this."
Ken's expression shifted, his usual bravado returning. He locked eyes with Ryu, nodding with newfound determination.

With the new rules in place, the match-ups needed to be redrawn, this time pairing fighters who had originally been opponents. A large team of coordinators quickly reorganized the match-ups, knowing that this approach would save time in the long run.
The fighters awaited their turns, each silently reflecting on the task ahead. Whatever rivalries or friendships they brought into the tournament would now be tested-and perhaps, transformed.
