"184, 185, 186, 18-"

Although hearing the numbers out loud is soothing, you begin to splutter, sweat beading up and falling into the sink.

"You're ruining your makeup babe."

You turn around in alarm and sure enough, Maria is by the door, worry and concern written all over her face.

"M-Maria I, I- why are you- leave m-"

Cautiously, Maria enters the bathroom and stays a good distance away from you, watching your shoulders move up and down.

"Y/N. Y/N?"

Your eyes are glued to the sink, watching the droplets of sweat glide down the sides and into the drain.

"186, 187, 187, 188, 189, 190" You resume your counting in a whisper, nodding your head along.

"Y/N. Darling, your hands..." There is a sense of urgency in Maria's voice, you grind your teeth in annoyance.

"190, 191, 192"

"Y/N! Please, stop! You're hurting yourself!" Her voice is shrill, piercing through your head.

"193,194,195,196,197" You were nearly there, just a few numbers to go and then you would be fine.

"197,197,197, 19-"

"Y/N!" She's screaming at you now.

You slam your fist onto the sink.

"Shut the fuck up, Maria! It's all ruined now! It's ruined, it's ruined, it's ruined..."

You start to close in on yourself, curling up and clawing at the sides of the sink in fatigue.

"Oh, you poor baby, come here Y/N."

Quickly, Maria walks over and hugs you, holding you close to her as if she is your mother and you her upset child.

"I didn't know Y/N, Erwin never told me that you had... Well, I just didn't know sweetheart, I'm so sorry." She nuzzles close to your ear, cradling you and rubbing your back.

"If I had known, I would never have invited so many guests. I'm so sorry." Maria whispers softly.

She pulls away to look at you, turning you around to face her.

Her smile is filled with pity, making it impossible for you to make eye contact.

Looking at the floor, you watch as Maria takes both your hands and inspects the injuries.

"Your fingers looked like they were going to snap, the way you were squeezing that sink." She lets go of your left hand and holds your right in both hands.

"And just look at this." She turns your hand over and gently touches the soon-to-be bruise on your wrist.

You wince and twist away from her.

In a little voice, you utter: "I would've been fine."

"What was that darling, I didn't hear yo-"

"I said, I would've been fine if you had just let me finish."

Maria is silent.

Your eyes are still trained on the floor.

"I- I see. I was just trying to help." Maria sounds crestfallen and dejected.

Maria's shoes are just about to move out of view when you blurt out: "But thank you, Maria, I appreciate it all the same."

She turns around and you meet her gaze straining the muscles in your cheek for a smile.

Maria tilts her head in joy and hugs you once more before pulling back and getting a tiny hairbrush from her bag.

Silently, she begins to brush your hair before looking around in her makeup bag for the right products to touch up a few parts of your face.

Before long, she's done, swiftly kissing you on the cheek before saying: "Take as much time as you'd like Y/N, I'll make sure that the majority of the guests are gone by the time you're out.

With that, she walks out, closing the door behind her.

You sigh and start to breathe normally again.

Why is she always there to save the day like some fucking superhero?

You shake your head in disbelief before looking into the mirror and flicking a strand of hair to the side.

What a self-righteous prick.

You take a moment to collect your thoughts and then exit the bathroom.

Just as Maria had said, there were noticeably fewer people in the foyer.

It didn't even reach double digits.

You blink, stunned.

My fairy godmother acts quickly, I suppose.

You laugh and turn, walking toward the dining room, a newfound confidence taking over you instantly.

The giant doors are open and you are met with nine faces standing by their chairs.

Waiting for you.

"The guest of honor finally presents herself." Erwin teases, his arm sweeping over to announce you.

He is at the head of the table and is wearing a huge smile, his eyebrows raised and cheeks red with liquor.

You curtsy and smile back sheepishly as laughter spreads around the dimly lit room.

Maria has to raise her voice to be heard, "Erwin, you stop that, allow our guest to relax a little before your jokes."

Maria is at the opposite end of the table and smiles at you in her motherly way.

Erwin winks at you boyishly.

"I kid, come take your seat, Y/N." Erwin nods to the seat on his left.

You walk over, as everyone watches you curiously.

The dimly lit room hides your flushed cheeks and sly grin as you make your way to your seat.

Erwin holds his glass and everyone else does the same, their smiles warped by their glasses of champagne.

"Thank you all for coming to this little gathering my girlfriend has arranged, it is so nice to see so many familiar faces in one room."

Sounds of appreciation fill the room and Erwin waits until it ceases before carrying on.

"Maria isn't very good at keeping secrets." Laughter once again bursts from the chests of the guests in good nature.

Maria rolls her eyes and chuckles.

"So she couldn't help but let it slip out that Y/N was coming when speaking to one of our guests. Unfortunately, I was in close proximity... You know the rest."

Erwin's laughter joins the room in amusement, his eyes meeting yours.

You can't help but laugh with him despite your burning embarrassment from all the attention.

Erwin faces Maria and you slowly stop laughing.

"Maria, darling, here's to you and your charming surprises."

Erwin raises his glass to her and all the guests begin to clink their glasses in unison.

Erwin then drinks his champagne and sits down, everyone else following suit.

The waiters start to walk in from the kitchen with trays of food.

"Let's eat!"
