" Alpha Rafe?" Someone asked as soon as he picked up the phone. Rafe still wasn't used to that, being called alpha. His dad had only recently retired and had given him the pack.

This couldn't be good, Rafe decided as soon as he realized who was on the other end of the line. Carson was a friend of the pack. As far as the public new, he was a kind man who liked to volunteer at the local hospital. In actuality, he was employed to Rafe's pack, as well as the other packs to be their eyes and ears. He was paid to watch the ER and let any of the packs know if anyone in their pack was suddenly brought in without their alpha's knowledge. It wouldn't be good for a human to get a hold of a shifters DNA. The Dark Ages only emphasized that point.

" What is it?" Rafe immediately asked a breath after Carson had spoken. His hesitation meant that this was really something bad.

" You need to come down here, asap. It isn't right to tell you this over the phone." He finally answered Rafe a moment later and Rafe immediately grabbed his car keys. Something must really be wrong to ask him to come down.

" I will be there in five." Rafe barked out as he hung up the phone.

" Dad, I need to go out. Carson just called." Rafe called out, knowing with their paranormal wolf hearing that his dad would hear him. He knew his dad heard him when a vulgar curse filled the air, followed by his mother's gasp.

" Language." She scolded him, making Rafe smile. No matter how old she got, mom would never change.

Rafe followed the voices and found them in the living room. Dad was sitting by the window, no doubt watching the pack through the window. He might not have the Alpha status anymore, but he still watched over and guarded the pack like one. He had been one of their best until his retirement and old habits died hard.

" I will make sure the tasks for today are done. Go." Rafe's father said, without looking away from the window.

Rafe had inherited his dad's black hair, but his mother's brown eyes. Both had grey hair beginning to overtake their natural colors, but he knew that with their ages, they could still hold their own, if needed. He could count on them if anything came up while he was checking on the wolf Carson had been so nervous about.

" Who is it?" Rafe immediately asked as he barged into the hospital's lobby.

The staff there knew him on sight because of how often one of his wolves had been drug in here. Being a wolf shifter was a dangerous life, but at least they had organized enough to form packs to protect each other from other paranormals. That did not mean that pack wolves were never harmed either though, and a humans first thought when they find someone injured is to take them to a hospital, leading to him showing up every so often to see how bad the shifter was.

" Come on. The nurse wants to talk to you." Carson answered as he immediately appeared in front of him. He had to be waiting for Rafe, also not a good sign. Rafe frowned as he restrained himself from demanding answers. What the hell was going on?

" Rafe Thyne?" The nurse asked as soon as they walked inside. Rafe recognized her immediately as one of the nurses that often took care of his wolves.

" Yes. Now will you tell me what is going on?" Rafe demanded, failing to keep his wolf's annoyance out of his voice.

" I asked Carson to call you because a woman was recently brought in. We managed to find her previous employer through some of her personal items. You are her only contact, as well as her emergency contact." She explained and Rafe's frown grew. Who would put him as their only contact? None of his pack would. They all had family and knew that Carson would notify him the moment a wolf was dragged in here.
