"I can tell you that the humans that are after them hired psychics to help. Their covenant doesn't have much power, but they have enough. It won't be long until they know she is here." James added. Freaking psychics, mind readers. This would complicate things.
"Why are they after her and are you one of them they hired?" Rafe asked and he his felt dad tense at his words. His dad was ready if he needed back up.
"For the reason, you will also have to take it up with Tyra." James tried, growing visibly tense as well.
"And no, I wasn't hired by them. My father is leader of another covenant that is intent on helping Jasmine and Tyra and ending this once and for all so that the two can have the life they deserve." Rafe begrudgingly admitted that he could respect that.
"Why the two of them? No Coven would willingly help a wolf, for fear of your council's punishment." Rafe asked and James went quiet in thought.
"It's a family matter I can't discuss." This time a growl did escape Rafe, and it obviously made James uncomfortable.
"Now that I can assure her that you two are safe, I should go." James said and Rafe's father's growl followed him this time as he headed for the door.
"I think you should." His father had growled after James, obviously sharing Rafe's frustration.
"For the record. Not all of us hate your kind and thank you for protecting me from your pack." James added before he walked out the door. His words surprised Rafe and he honestly didn't know what to say. It was nearly ingrained in shifters to hate magic users and vise versa. How could this coven exist? It had to be a rouse.
"Tell Jasmine I will come visit her again after her mother is here." James called again before he walked to the end of the driveway and simply disappeared in a shimmer of energy. Seeing and smelling magic still made Rafe feel sick.
"Magic users are selfish and don't care about other living things, only getting more power." Dad reminded Rafe as soon as James was gone.
"I know dad." Rafe answered before he walked back through the house and eyed things he wanted fixed or touched up before Tyra arrived. Finally, he would get to see her again.
His mom and dad put Jasmine to bed so that Rafe could finish up a few things he had been neglecting for the pack. It was then he looked out and saw that the sun was setting. James had told him before sunset. Had something happened to her on her way back?
Dale hadn't gotten any new information, but he had promised to keep interrogating the two men that had brought to the packhouse after that attack. He had lost track of how many times he had thanked Dale for helping them and the praise seemed to have made Dale more determined to please Rafe. That would help.
Ugh. Where was she? Why hadn't he asked James for a phone number at least, he thought as he paced around his office, growing both worried an anxious with each passing moment.
Suddenly, Rafe's cell rang, and he nearly jumped out his skin as he tried to hold onto his phone. Rafe took a calming breath and looked down to see hair beginning to emerge on his skin. Was he so nervous that he couldn't even control his shapeshifting? The number was his dads. Jasmine, his mind called out as worry and fear sparked inside him.
"Tyra's here. I can only assume she picked up on Jasmine's scent and came here." His dad said, sounding worried. Rafe should have just left his pack business for later, now he might miss his chance.
"Don't let her leave." Rafe ordered his dad as he ran out the door.
His office was a different building, it had always been that way in case the pack had visitors and Rafe did not want them knowing his packs business. His mom was pacing by the door when he entered the house. She didn't say anything, just pointed up the stairs.
