So this is the past startle, before he committed suicide by jumping off a tall building. Odin has had his eyes on him for a long time and since Startle ended up in hell. (Odin is a Prince of hell) He decided to take it whit him to give it another chance of live and immortality, as a granted wish. He started working for him things just kept on getting better and better, but Startle hated it he didn't want to work for the devil.
It made him feel so unwanted unloved by the world, but just sucked it up and worked for him anyways
