I have a good memory as to how lot of the episodes went, but there was one that stuck with me well into adulthood. That being the show's Halloween special, "The Legend of the Whispering Willows." This episode was only ever broadcasted ONCE on its premiere, but ever saw the light of day again until the series got a DVD release, which I'll get to in a minute. Now I know a lot of people are probably asking "Well doesn't this show have a name?" I'm sure it does, but I just don't remember it at the moment. If it does pop into my head, I'll edit this post when I'm good and ready. So without further ado, sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy this somewhat dramatic retelling of the long since sought after cartoon "The Legend of the Whispering Willows..."
Before I start, let me tell you about HOW I saw the episode after its premiere since my mom didn't record it on VHS. We had a sort of chain store in the area called "Roses." It wasn't EXACTLY like Family Dollar or your typical dollar store. It was more like those clashed with Target or Wal-Mart. Roses carried pretty much everything a normal store would. But like the dollar stores in existence, they bought a lot of outdated stuff in bulk (like computer games and bootleg copies of popular movies an TV shows). My dad took me to Roses after school as a reward for either passing a test or getting a good report card. We'd either go there just to browse, or in rare cases, I'd see something that aught my eye and my dad would treat me to said thing. Well, it was one of those times where I had gotten an A+ on a test, I think I was in 3rd grade at the time and the show had just ended. Roses had just gotten a bulk delivery of DVDS that day and they freshly stocked them just as we came in. I made my way to the electronics section with my dad and there I saw it...
This was what I ASSUMED was a rerun of the TV show (which my mom would record on VHS back at the house when it came on). My dad said he'd browse around the store, and he knew I was never the kind of child to cause a scene, so he left me to watch my show. We agreed to meet by the cash registers in case I found something I wanted to buy and we parted ways. So I stood by one of the TVS and started watching. Luckily, the opening theme was halfway done by the time he left. I expected this to be a repeat of an episode I might have already seen, but I was confused when the theme ended. The screen went black for about 2 seconds before eerie organ music began to play in the background, followed by stock Halloween sound effect (like the laughter of a witch, lightning, and bats squeaking as they would fly away) before it faded to the alley at night with the title card "The Legend of the Whispering Willows" came on screen.
The pups were "Trick or Treating" by looking for any leftover scraps that innocent bystanders may have dropped. These ranged from food to "treasures" like watches and small toys. Out of all the pups, Tika's bag was the fullest. It was practically overflowing with junk while Lacey, Spud, and Beanie's bags were half full. Or in this case, Spud was picking up dead rats and birds. "I don't know about you guys, but I don't see any hidden treasure around here." He said, pulling his bag behind him. "That's because you keep picking up all the dead animals, Spud. Gross!" Lacey replied in disgust. "Maybe the hidden treasure is what's INSIDE the dead stuff!" Spud suggested, garnering a not so pleasant reaction from the rest of his group. That is, except for Tika. She was usually one to agree with something this gross, but she wandered off while Lacey and Spud were at each other's throats. We couldn't see where she was at the time since the writers wanted to add a comedic argument scene. But the two pups were cut off by Tika shouting "Look what I found!!!" from a few inches away. The pups turned their heads and walked over towards their friend, who was standing by a stop sign.
Tika was holding onto what looked to be a fancy dog collar. No, not fancy by stray dog standards. It didn't look like the sort of collar that you'd typically find in a pet store. This looked like it was CUSTOM MADE. It was a blue collar with white and gold lace trimmed along the sides. The tag was also quite high end, too. The front was a silver diamond with a gem in the center. And not an ordinary gem, but it housed a miniature diorama of the night sky with a glimmering full moon inside. I'd describe to be identical to that of one of those water keychains. "Gee. That sure looks pretty, Tika!" Beanie gasped in awe as his eyes focused on the tag. "I know right? You rarely find dog collars around here these days!" Tika smiled before proceeding to put the collar around her neck. "This is a keeper for sure!" She proceeded to walk off happily before Lacey stepped on her tail.
