12 / Library Confrontation

The following afternoon, after class, Dyna and I step into the library. Other than a few other girls, the building is quiet and calm. We make our way to a table and settle down, focusing on our studies. We pore over our notes on numbers and calculations, quizzing each other to ensure we're ready for the contest.

I snap a picture of my Epad on the table, posting it to my social network. We're required to post a photo at least once a week, and one selfie per month. I dread the days I have to post a picture of myself. I don't want people to see my yellow eye. It gives them a reason to make fun of me. If I become famous, I hope this eye will no longer be a target for ridicule.

I'm not sure how much time passes when Rosalie and her friends saunter into the library, their laughter cutting through the silence. My stomach tightens as Rosalie's eyes lock onto me. I shift in my seat and nudge Dyna in the side.

"Do you think it's time to go?" I whisper to her when she glances at me with a raised eyebrow.

Dyna's eyes follow the trio of girls as they approach. Rosalie has a smirk plastered to her lips.

"Look who we have here," she says, pausing at our table. "Two nobodies. You know, I kinda feel bad for you. I mean, I know we—" she gestures between herself and her friends "—have what it takes to become famous and marry a rich, influential man from Kilmy. But you two?" Rosalie clucks her tongue, shaking her head with a faux frown on her face. "You'll always be a nobody."

I roll my eyes, glaring at her. She doesn't know what she's talking about. We're going to become something...even if we don't win. It's Rosalie who won't make it very far. Being rich and famous doesn't solve all your problems. And why is she so eager to marry someone? Does she want to become a bourgeois wife and gain a title? Why does she want to get married and depend on someone?

The contest is both a blessing and a curse. It holds the power to transform lives and bring happiness to those who succeed, but also to shroud the rest in regret for their entire lives if they fail, which is the case for most girls.
