I grab my stuff and walk beside Dyna, ignoring her curses as we walk away. Rosalie is used to getting what she wants. And in a place like Valencygne, you must take what you can. I truly don't understand where she gets the idea she's better than everyone else. Ok, she's smart, but it's not like Rosalie lived another life before coming here.

We're all heading back home after the long work and school day.

"The government is unfair sometimes," Dyna says as we walk down the uneven sidewalk.

I glance around, hoping no one overheard her.

"Shh," I murmur, shooting a look toward the girls surrounding us. "Don't talk like that."

"Well, it's true. I mean, this whole world is ridiculous."

I've never heard Dyna talk like this before. I swallow, grasp her hand, and keep strolling. "It may be ridiculous," I say quietly. "But we still have each other. That's all that matters, right?"

I didn't know what I'd do without Dyna by my side. She and Annelide are my rocks. They give me a shoulder to "cry" on, or an ear to vent to. And I'd do the same for them in a heartbeat.

Dyna shrugs, running a hand through her hair. "The government doesn't truly care about us as they claim. We're under their command and it's stupid. Why should we have to enter some silly contest to live a glamorous life? Why can't we all live that way already? Why can't we all make our own decisions? What we wear, what we eat, who we talk to..." she trails off, staring off into space. "Who initiated this contest? "

I don't have an answer for her. No one does.

These are all questions I've thought about at one point or another. I'm sure we all have. But we don't speak them out loud. We don't criticize the government either. the last person I heard talk about the government in this way was my sister Annelide the day she learned she would never go to Kilmy. She was so angry and sad at the same time.

Dyna and I part ways and I head home.

                                                                                                -------

There's a knock on the door not long after I arrive. No one is there when I open the door. I'm about to close the door when a rock catches my attention.

Why is there a rock in front of our door?

Must be a bad joke.

Maybe it was another one of Rosalie's and her friends' tricks.

I step out a little farther, but no one is around.  I put the pebble back with the others.

The map does not show any anomaly and no one around my house except my neighbors.

No pirates around either. I hope I will never see any.

However, one detail attracts my attention. Dyna did not send me any messages. She is probably studying. I should probably do the same.
