the year later

it was one of those childish, vulgar school brawls y/n usually never engaged in, but then watanabe himari, like the annoying bitch she was, picked on her to no end.

it started off just like any other day ㅡ uneventful and quiet. she was sat in the train station downtown amidst thursday evening's harsh weather when himari stumbled up the platform with loud, clumsy footsteps, her large friend group in tow.

before she could look away and turn back to her phone, himari's gaze had already locked on her the way a beast stared down its prey before pouncing. with matching looks, her group had crowded around her seat before she could even grab for her bag.

this time, she didn't bother trying to muffle the profanity leaving her lips. she shifted on her seat, swallowing down her irritation before looking up.

"whatㅡ" she began, only to be suddenly cut short, her eyes narrowing when someone's palm connected with her face.

hissing, she met himari's gaze with contempt. started counting to ten in her head.

trying to keep her voice even, she asked, "what was that for?"

"don't act like you don't know." himari scowled, clearly annoyed by the fact that she wasn't giving her the reaction she had wanted. "leave my boyfriend alone, you hear me? everyone's saying you were trying to hit on him earlier."

she arched a brow in disbelief. "by letting him copy my math homework?"

"oh, don't give me that shit, rias."

"i know i'm rarely ever nice to your sort, but just because i am doesn't mean i have an ulterior motive."

himari huffed, "look at you with the attitude. as if it isn't bad enough that you spend all your free time spying on the volleyball team like a complete weirdo."

"and definitely not because my brother's on the team," she supplied dryly. "completely unrelated."

"your brother, who's only in this school because of his volleyball scholarship?" himari brought up, seething. "always acting like some big shot around campus too just because he's on the team. you know, word's going around that he hasn't even been scouted yet." realizing she must have finally hit a nerve, she smiled smally. "as vice captain, isn't that a little pathetic?"

the ends of y/n's lips twitched. she didn't mind getting picked on; she was brought up in a household that taught her how to handle herself, and she was in no way innocent when it came to mocking mysta on a daily basis. however, it was a completely different story once it came out of someone else's mouth entirely.

from watanabe himari, of all people.

"i don't know." raising her head, y/n mocked back a smile. "why don't you try asking your boyfriend when he tries out again for the team this year?"
