y/n laid on her bed, blinking through the darkness of the early morning. she couldn't go back to sleep, so she stripped off her comforter and shifted on to her side.

her clock flashed back at her. 12:08, it read.

ever since her fight with himari, her arms and a small portion of her face had been aching nonstop to a point where she found herself waking up to the stinging in her jaw.

when she got home late earlier that evening with luca in tow, she immediately ran up to her room to avoid having to go through another interrogation from her mom. by the time she had changed into her pajamas, the faint rumble of luca's voice downstairs had subsided, followed by the shut of the front door.

luca had always been good at talking to people. he had enough charm to easily slip through tight conversations and lessen the overall gravity of the situation. y/n, on the other hand, couldn't lie to save her life, so luca and her fell into an easy agreement on the walk home that he would be the one to handle her mom.

with that, it left her to deal with mysta, which was probably worse.

mysta was always very protective of her growing up. he never let her go anywhere unsupervised, which is why she relied on him a bit too much sometimes. for years, the rias siblings were always a package deal ㅡ you wanted one, you get the other too.

that is, until luca came in the picture.

luca was known to be very sociable and earnest with everyone he met, so it didn't come as a surprise that he managed to break the great routine of the rias siblings, one of which included their daily walks home. normally, mysta would never let her go on the train alone during rush hour, much less actually have another man with her once it was past five. however, during the occasional hell week where mysta would stay behind to submit his papers, the fourth year captain was always the first person he called to walk his little sister home instead.

even though his house was four stations away, luca didn't seem to mind the side trip. in fact, sometimes it was almost as if he looked forward to it just so he would have an excuse to lounge around their house until dinner.

mysta trusted luca more than anyone, and y/n trusted him just as much because of this.

reaching for her phone on her nightstand, she took a second to adjust to the searing brightness of her screen. she didn't have any unread messages or notifications.

sighing, she sat up and looked at her window. it was still dark and the room directly across from hers had their blinds shut, indicating that it was late enough for most of the neighborhood to already be in bed by now.

despite this, she found herself shooting luca a text out of habit.

me: hey are u awake?

there was no way she would be able to go back to sleep with her jaw stinging and her throat burning raw. even with the strong urge to stay in bed, she eventually got up and headed down to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
