Chapter Twenty-One

Lincoln stood at the top of the hallway and scoured it for signs of Abbie.  He hadn't seen her all day and she hadn't responded to his text.  She hadn't met him for lunch or at morning break.

It was now afternoon break and Lincoln was a little confused by her absence.  He suddenly caught a glimpse of her backpack as she stood with a group of girls.  He jogged down and grabbed her gently from behind in a hug.

"I missed you at lunch.  Where you been?"

She purposely wriggled from his embrace and turned to face him.

"Nowhere" she replied coldly.

"What is up?" he asked, noticing her tone and her avoidance of eye contact.

Abbie looked up into his eyes and he could see the pain behind hers.

"Lincoln, I can't go out with you anymore.  I think we should break up."  Her voice wavered as she spoke.

"What?!" sputtered Lincoln, "Why? Is it because of Nathan and Theo?  Don't let them get in the way of what we have."

"No, it is not because of them" she answered.

"Then why?" he pressed.

"It's...it's because of my Uncle" she said, tears brimming around her eyes.

"Your Uncle?  I don't understand"

"I can't talk about this right now.  Figure it out" she said, walking briskly away.

"Abbie" he called, but she didn't turn around.

Lincoln pushed open the door of the shop and trudged slowly in.  Mr Cassidy watched him from behind the counter.

"Hey Lincoln" he smiled.

Lincoln looked at him but didn't return his smile.

"What is wrong?"

"It is Abbie.  She broke up with me today.  She wouldn't tell me why.  She just said it had something to do with you" said Lincoln, looking at him desperately.

Mr Cassidy looked disturbed.

"Ah, perhaps I can shed some light.  Abbie rang me last night, in quite a state.  She asked me if I knew anything about you stealing from the shop.  It seems that Nathan had told her what happened.  I had no other option but to tell her the truth.  And I told her all the truth, of how I have forgiven you and what I think of you now.  I told her not to make any rash decisions.  Evidently, she didn't take my advice."
