Chapter Forty-Two

Lincoln felt himself being shaken and opened his eyes to the harsh overhead lighting.  He saw Mrs Luca and bolted upright in the hard plastic chair.

"How is he?  What is going on?"

She smiled at him wearily.

"He has been out of surgery for a few hours.  You can go and see him now if you like."

He followed her to the side room and pushed the door open for him.

"I'll leave you alone for a moment" she said.

He walked into the quiet room.

Luca lay flat on the bed, wires were coming out of him.  His eyes were closed.  Maybe he hadn't woken up yet.  Maybe he would never wake up.

Lincoln pulled the chair close to the bed and watched his friend's chest rise and fall.  He couldn't believe that this had happened.  It was his fault that Luca was dying.  He had been looking for him.  He wouldn't have been there otherwise.

After a moment, Lincoln slipped his hand into Luca's and gripped it.

Tears streamed down his face and he lay his head on Luca's hand.

"I'm sorry, I am so sorry, this is all my fault" he whispered.

After a few minutes, Lincoln heard the door open and Mrs Luca came back in, with two police officers trailing her.

"Are you Lincoln Taylor?" one of them asked.

"Yes" he said standing up confused.

They walked over to him.

"Lincoln Taylor, I am arresting you on suspicion of stealing a car..."

Lincoln was in shock as they read him his rights and handcuffed him.

"Wait, no.  I need to stay here.  I will hand myself in later but I need to stay with Luca now."

Lincoln struggled against them.

"Stop struggling, you are coming with us now" said the bigger officer.

"I need to be here when he wakes up" shouted Lincoln.

They bungled him out of the room and down the corridor.

Mrs Luca sighed and turned to her husband.
