Chapter Thirty-Five

After a four hour shift at the shop, Lincoln was well into his second hour of studying once again.  History coursework: his final piece.  He sat back for a minute and rubbed his neck which was sore from bending over the keyboard.  Sam looked up from his book in the corner.  He was smartly dressed; he and Debs had a dinner party that night and he was waiting for her to finish getting ready.  He had been waiting for half an hour.

"She still isn't ready?" enquired Lincoln.

"Nope" said Sam staring at his watch.  "This is something you will learn about women Linc..."

The doorbell rang and they heard Kat's muffled yell of "I'll get it".

A few moments later, Kat came in with Abbie.

"Wow, you both look beautiful girls" said Sam.

Lincoln swivelled round to see Abbie, all made up and wearing a black dress that stopped just above the knee.

"You look gorgeous" said Lincoln.

Abbie blushed.

Lincoln's heart fell when he remembered why.

"You really shouldn't go out without me looking like that." he half smiled.

She smiled.  She caught Sam's eye and looked away.

"I am really sorry about the other day Mr Taylor.  I am so embarrassed."

"Don't worry about it but Lincoln and I have had a word about it."

Lincoln rolled his eyes.

"Remind me where it is you girls are off to?"

"It is Ella's 16th birthday so she is having a party" said Kat.

"Ella?  How lovely" said Sam.

"We were wondering if we could ask you a favour" said Kat, putting her arm around her Dad.  "Can Linc come to the party with us?"

Sam opened his mouth to respond but Abbie spoke first.

"We know he is grounded but it would mean a lot and we would help him with any work tomorrow" she looked at Sam with big, doe eyes.

Sam looked from the girls to his son, who didn't look hopeful.

"Just history left now?"

"Yep" said Lincoln.

"You've worked hard.  You deserve a night off."  Sam gave him a wink.
